Good
Timothy from Pembury, Kent, GB (Group of work colleagues) 02 October 2008

Except for the bed problem, ideal budget accomodation. (107217669)

positive comments Value for money, good location with food and bars close by, very close to port and easy to get to with plenty of parking
negative comments Room is small, but the price reflects that, the third bed is a bunk, as shown in the picture, however in our room the securing bolts to the wall had come loose! We put the mattress on the floor, the bed seemed to settle more than we would have liked.
Poor
Alex from Glasgow, GB (Young couple) 29 September 2008

I will not be staying again and I am looking in to make a proper formal complaint to recieve some of my money back especially for the internet usage, as I needed access to check my Eurotunnel booking. The room was so bad that my girlfriend actually started crying at how horrible and disgusting the room was. (107227739)

positive comments The Internet Booking was nice and simple and confirmation was clear. Check in was easy...
negative comments The room was disgusting and there was mould on the sealing. The mattress was practically distorted in shape and I slept on an uphill angle all night. I could smell the people next door smoking. The website and email confirmation also told me there was free wireless internet, but I was charged 5Euro for this, which is very unfair.

positive comments Great value! 40 Euros for the night. The hotel is very basic but was clean. The staff were efficient. It was ideal for us as an overnight stay after arriving on the ferry and then travelling down to the Dordogne.

Ok for a short stopover not for a prolonged stay. (97720100)

positive comments Clean Sheets, TV picked up English Channels, Breakfast was good, friendly staff
negative comments The Hotel was tired and looked as if it could do with a face lift, poor carpets, you had to be thin to access the shower, cracks in the basin, garish paint on doorframes, no drawers or anywhere for clothes only 5 coathangers for the three of us.

We didn't expect the hotel to be particularly glamourous, and it's hard to describe it as such, but for the price we were very happy, and for an overnight stop it was very much ideal. Just a shame about the confusion over the payment at the start, which made us fairly suspicious initially. (97128504)

positive comments The hotel was good value for money and was generally better than I expected in terms of room facilities. I was also pleased to have access to some English TV channels, though I expect this will soon come to an end due to the UK's decision to start making all of our channels digital-only! We liked the sense of local pride in the bar, which was dedicated to the local football team (we came to watch the team play as the main reason for our visit, so this added to the overall impact of our enjoyment). The barman was friendly and spoke good English, which was useful given our limited grasp of French. The location of the hotel was superb - much nearer to the station than we expected.
negative comments The receptionist made life quite confusing for us, given that we spoke only limited French. She took more money from us than was stipulated on our receipt, and returned it to us when we queried the bill, which made the start of our visit fairly unsettling. The bar prices were quite high, but when compared to other local bars, the mark-up wasn't perhaps as unreasonable as you might expect, and I liked the Wilfort beer which I didn't see anywhere else on our trip. However, I could only really afford to drink one glass-full at those prices.

Hotel is fine for an overnight stay - I wouldn't stay here longer than one night since the rooms are very basic and the bathroom is small. It's just like a Formula 1 or Etap hotel so it's ok. (97902979)

The accommodation was extremely basic and i would rather pay sightly more for a little more comfort. It was very small and not entirely clean there was certainly room for improvement. Smoking should definatley NOT be aloud inside especially so close to the breakfast facility. Becuase of the smoking inside i will not book again. (97770370)

positive comments Cost
negative comments Very basic facilities in need of redecoration and updating

The room is basic but clean and the staff are friendly and English speaking. You can even get English TV!!!. For somewhere just to rest your head in Calais and have an simple breakfast for an additional €5 it is excellent value for money. The shower does not allow easy access for anyone overweight. (97974801)

positive comments Easy to book in, secure car parking, right in the centre of town
negative comments The colour scheme makes the hotel appear 'dated',

negative comments Shower door jammed against toilet making it difficult to get into the shower.

Mark from Bristol, GB (Group of adult friends) 17 October 2007

Budget accommodation at its most basic, but at 40EUR for each 3 bed room you shouldn't be expecting anything else. Had the room been aired before we got there I probably wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for stopovers or a flying visit to Calais en route to other places. (97063765)

positive comments Very cheap, staff were very helpful and courteous, plentiful free on-site parking, pairs of adjacent rooms share a lockable entrance hall so can be used as a 6 bed suite instead of separate rooms.
negative comments Both rooms smelt strongly of damp when we arrived
Good
REINE from Englefield |Green, GB (Mature couple) 04 October 2007

Adequate, relatively inexpensive facility for short 1-2 day stay if traveling with little luggage; rather spartan accommodations. Fine for the budget-minded. (97006044)

positive comments location and price--located near railway station and center of town; cost of room lower than other hotels
negative comments rugs stained and worn; paint needs refreshing; very small size of room;no drawer storage space; shower stall very small (door barely opens because it hits the toilet seat); no phone in room, so no way to reach reception desk.

We had no problems checking in. The rooms were ready for us upon arrival, but one did have a smell. The staff kindly changed that smelly room for us. The staff also allowed us an extra key as we locked ourselves out. All the facilities worked adequately. Thank you. (97609329)

positive comments It was clean and ready for us on arrival.
negative comments One of the rooms had a smell we did not appreciate.

Paul from South Woodham Ferrers, GB (Family with older children) 02 October 2007

I got exactly what I expected (after reading reviews) even down to the slighty too smokey bar....well we were in France! It was a good choice for what we needed, an overnight stop with bar. Everything was clean, service was good, location great. Would recommend it for an overnight stop and will stay there again. We paid extra for breakfast and that too was fine, simple but just what we needed after a late night. (97730459)

positive comments Good Location, Parking, Price
negative comments If I was bit picky - the rooms need a paint and some of the Bathroom needed attention but I wasn't expecting anything else at the price

Check in was speedy, man on the desk spoke English - which is always useful, even though I speak French. The room was small ish, but everything we needed was there. (99266895)

positive comments Easy to find, very reasonable price, friendly staff, comfortable ish bed.
negative comments Nothing really - although the idea of one door on the landing leading to two rooms was a bit strange, even though you then had your own door obviously!

No overall comment. (99430531)

positive comments It was very reasonably priced and clean. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast at 5 Euros was good value.
negative comments Being of a larger build, I could not fit into the shower! This was because the shower door opened against the toilet pan and therefore could not open fully, thus making it impossible for me and my fuller figure to get into the shower.

I've stayed in Bonsai Hotels before and this one is not typical of the standard I had come to expect. I accept it is a budget hotel but I have had far better experiences in similar establishments elsewhere. The absence of carpet in the room was an experience I had not had before, the shower room light didn't work, this turned out to be because it didn't have a tube in it and after two attempts they finally found a tube that worked. The wash hand basin was cracked, the door of the shower struck the toilet and made it very difficult to get into and out of the shower, the shower mixer didn't have a thermostat and the temperature of the water varied widely, almost to scalding hot on some occassions. The stairs were very narrow and, in the absence of a lift made it an unpleasent experience to use, especially when you met someone coming the other way and finally the television didn't have a remote control. I wasn't aware that it was possible to get a television set without a remote control these days! (99837682)

positive comments It was conveniently situated close to the town centre.
negative comments Poor standard of accommodation.

negative comments maybe im being a bit picky but bathroom sink was cracked and had been held together with sealant, could also benefit with coffee making facilities, apart from that ,excellent value
