Guest reviews of the The Cornwallis Country Hotel

Good
Anthony from Selby, GB (Mature couple) 28 September 2008

We enjoyed our stay despite the above minor points. The hotel was conveniently situated for our visit. Even though this hotel had an Investors in People award, we suspect that staff training and attention to detail was lacking. This is a management fault not a staff fault. (107441813)

positive comments Friendly staff. No problem with Gluten free diet.
negative comments General appearance required refreshing. Piles of laundry bags, chairs etc in an unlocked outbuilding and in full view. Rubbish burnt within the grounds - left smouldering. We had to find our booking confirmation print out. Booking did not appear on hotel computer. Long wait for breakfast one day when staff did not turn in. Lone waitress did her best.

I would recommend it to anybody as a relaxed, professionally run hotel, which is excellent value for money. (107268537)

positive comments Excellent breakfast, and overall relaxed atmosphere of the hotel and its surroundings.
negative comments Hot water took a long time to get through. Booking process saw Active hotles take around four days to let the Cornwallis Hotel know that I had made a booking. In the meantime, all of the rooms could have been booked up, and I would have lost my booking.

Peaceful hotel, good place to relax and unwind. (108075536)

positive comments Excellent hotel and helpful staff.
negative comments Despite having confirmation of booking (on internet) the hotel had no record of our booking. They accepted the print out of the confirmation and we got the room as described in the internet booking.

Good, but let down by our evening meal . We will certainly never eat there again. (108087042)

positive comments Beautiful hotel, room and gardens. Friendly and helpful staff.
negative comments Dinner service was poor, the dishes of variable quality inedible (I sent back my overly smoked steak uneaten), dessert service was confused and we had to re-order a number of times until we found desserts that were actually available. Although, to compensate, we were given our dessert (ice creams!) free we certainly expected better from an award winning restaurant.

positive comments Staff Food Room
negative comments The hotel is trying to operate as a local hostelry,commercial/tradespeople guests, and as a very pleasant venue for weddings, this cannot work as the two do not mix.

positive comments The room was clean and comfortable, the hotel facilities were quiet very relaxing, the grounds were very pleasant to sit in and would be great in the summer.

The room was good value for money and had a comfy bed (although slightly small). The staff were friendly but the only downside was the bar closing early. The breakfast was nice and there was plenty of choice from the menu. Recommended. (97523734)

positive comments Amazing room and 4 poster bed.

PAUL from CAMBRIDGE, GB (Mature couple) 18 February 2008

On arrival greeted well but was shown to small room, we had booked a four poster room. Soon rectified when we poduced our booking form. Nice location, relaxing and good food. Wish service at dinner had been a little better for us. (97692759)

positive comments Rural location, Evening meal very nice
negative comments Service at dinner was slow between starter and main, then left a long while to order dessert. Dessert plates never cleared left table without coffee as had tired of sitting at table. Maybe because it was Valentines Day perhaps service is better when not so busy !

positive comments The hotel is surrounded by very pretty mature gardens and was promisingly attractive when we drove up to the outside. The main guest areas are comfortable and we found the open fire in the bar very inviting. Staff in the bar and restaurant were very helpful going out of their way to provide a good service. i would recommend dinner at this hotel.
negative comments Rooms were shabby. In the first room , the curtains were ripped, duvet cover was washed out and there was no heating. In the second room (which was much improved) the bath panel kept falling off, the light bulbs had not been replaced and there was no hot water.

Soile from Stockport, GB (Group of adult friends) 23 October 2007

We were very impressed with the hotel, the building itself and the lovely grounds. The family room we stayed in great, and we were very impressed that it was on two floors which gave us all more privacy (there were three of us adults sharing the room). The breakfast was lovely too - it made a nice change to be able to order cooked breakfasts from a menu rather than having the typical buffet. It was a shame we didn't have more time to spend at the hotel, as we were only really stopping over to attend a nearby wedding. (97883941)

positive comments Lovely hotel, room and grounds.
negative comments Check in could have been a bit earlier.

Joanne from Wickford, United Kingdom;GB (Young couple) 04 April 2007

My husband and i stayed at the hotel to celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary and found that it was exactly what we were looking for. The staff were friendly and helpful, but not in your face. We did find that it was maybe a little understaffed, but it wasnt a major problem. The room was very clean and comfortable. The food was excellent - congrats to the chef!!!! Although the drinks we found were quite expensive. Overall - yes we will be staying at the Cornwallis Hotel again. (99797061)

positive comments My husband and i loved the gardens and the relaxed nature of the hotel.

we were expecting abetter class of hotel than was advertised, will not be staying there again (99666279)

positive comments The location although it rained most of the time
negative comments The room was dimly lit and was in need of redecoration. The breakfast service was very poor we had to wait in excess of 20mins for the Cornwallis cooked breakfast, again the room was in need of redecoration & refurbishment. We required more milk for or room but was unable to find anybody on reception between 6pm & 7pm

After being told that the restaurant was closed and seeing my problem as I had asked for a table at 8.30 the management took action. Thery set up a table in the conservatory where they also put a red rose on the table. We effcetively had a private dining room where we served with a very delicious meal. (99032487)

positive comments The room was well appointed and very comfrtable having been recently refurbished

Very enjoyable stay. The hotel is delightful and the grounds well worth a stroll round. The meal was excellent and good value too. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The easiest booking in we have ever had. A really good weekend break. (99644270)

positive comments comfortable room, lots of character. good bed

No overall comment. (99773427)

negative comments Unfortunately, the room we booked had been given to someone else. We were allocated another room which proved to be a mistake by the hotel as they had a function on that night and we had to request to be moved to a quieter part of the hotel. The room we were eventually allocated, was adequate.
