It is a hotel with potential, but I reckon they need to overcome the typical British arrogance and become more flexible and friendly to their guests, with more willingness to accommodate personal needs. British stiffness and rigidity is laughed at around the world, and I could not believe how prominent those elements were present in the overall attitude of that hotel. The errors of apparently too relaxed staff I can understand, but did not appreciate the outward politeness that proved to be only skin deep.

Environment, facilities, friendly and polite staff in general, but with notable negatives coming from the Reception staff - see next.

1st point: Check out time 11am-too early! I requested repeatedly for a slight extension of check out time and was refused. I finally asked how much it would cost me to stay until 3pm. They said not possible and charged me 20 pounds for checking out at 1pm. That was unique in my 30 years of business traveling. All hotels allow delayed check out even without payment, eg. 1 or 2 pm. They charge for late check out e.g. 6pm - but NEVER have I been charged 20 pounds to check out at 1pm! I asked for the Hotel Manager to file a complain, but they effectively refused to call him/her. That was unacceptable and I would never advise any one to go there if they want to feel welcome and treated as a real guest.
2nd point. I asked at the Reception until when was the Breakfast time and I was told 10:30am. I went at 10:05 to find that breakfast was no longer served; they told me that 10:30 applies only on weekends. They charge 10 pounds for breakfast as optional choice, which I had chosen in my case. I understand that it was a personal error, but no one apologised on behalf of the person who made the error, and it added to the negative experience I had.
3rd point. When using the swimming pool I specifically asked until when the facilities were open. While the changing rooms and showers ought to be still open, when I tried to enter from the pool area I found the lights out. I was forced to go around wet through the bar area to find someone to switch on the lights for me to collect my clothes from the locker! Very negative!

Hotel maintenance/expansion is an understandable risk, but we were impressed that (apart from the state of some of the corridors) it did not interfere with our stay.
The room itself (standard double) was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Well worth the money.

Location and hotel facilities (spa)

Restaurant closed earlier than we'd have liked (9pm), but room service was excellent and the food was very good.

I completed the room questionaire and thought this would have been sufficient. In general I thought the quietness was appreciated and found the staff very helpful.Would like to see two menus alternating each day to give a better choice for those staying more than one night.

A poor choice of meals in main restaurant despite the printed number of chefs (7) on the menu. A poor choice of 4 starters, 4 mains and very poor deserts. we were given good advice and went to the local Inn and were very pleased with the food, excellent choice & fresh , well cooked.
Spa facilities excellent and will be better once the renovations are completed.
Overall a good place to stay but we thought it was probably trying to specialise in the coorporate and conference facilities and not the independant sector.

excellent value rooms, clean and a good size

No through air in room, no air con, no fans in stifling heat, thus unsettling night,

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting, my only comment would be that the bar menu was a little sparse for evening meals although there is a restaurant which probably has a larger selection. Apart from that it was a pleasant stay with friendly and helpful staff.

Nice relaxing atmosphere and pleseant surroundings.

Nothing.
