Enjoyable if expensive. (97023008)

positive comments The hotel itself and our room was very well appointed, in keeping with the 18thC fabric of the former houses themselves. Our room was comfortable and the mini bar was well stocked with a good selection of items. We enjoyed the potted histories of previous residents of this part of London that were contained in the information pack in the room. We liked the Conservatory downstairs with its own mini bar where one could flake out after a long trek. The hotel is very accessible for the attractions of the City and London as a whole. The staff were polite, friendly and accommodating.
negative comments We found the Cowcross St side of the hotel to be very noisy at night in what should be a quiet backwater: There was, for me, an unacceptable level of noise from outside the hotel from revellers and others. Making one's way back to the hotel at night could be daunting for some, considering the number of pubs close with many people congregating on the pavements outside. If we stayed again, a room away from street would be a requirement. The lack of a lift and car parking facilities could pose problems for some visitors.

positive comments Loved the location and set up. Overall the impression of the hotel was very good. We both liked the decor, furniture and general ambience. I would love to stay there again but please see point about the nightclub.
negative comments Overall I enjoyed the hotel and facilities. I work in the location and know the area quite well, however I hadn't realised there was a club nearby that involved all of the punters queing for hours before it opened just across the street and getting into party mode. A bit noisy to say the least. Not a place for a quiet weekend break.

A very pleasant experience, rather like being in an elegant house in town rather than a hotel. Made our daughter's wedding weekend an even greater success. (97604261)

positive comments Character and individuality, quality of furnishings etc, attention to detail, willingness to accommodate early arrival.
negative comments No bad points really. People waiting to get into a nearby club created some noise, but not for very long, and this is central London after all.

No lift. The original room I booked, had only a bath. The shower did not have a curtain or a fixing to use the shower one handed. The Rookery kindly changed rooms for me to a ground room. I am slightly disabled. I would book another stay here as long as could have a stand-up shower rather than a bath. Otherwise great! (97082912)

Great hotel, fab rooms with loads of character. (97813634)

positive comments Individual hotel, not at all faceless
negative comments Still a bit noisy at night despite being in the city and at the weekend - sash windows were very pretty but didn't keep noise out!

Nick from Hereford, United Kingdom;GB (Same sex couple) 13 July 2007

This hotel is quite an experience, and a polar opposite to bland box-like hotels. It is not quite as it seems - the paintings are prints for example, but the decor, furnishings and personal service are interesting and unexpectedly delightful. Our request to have breakfast served not in our (three) rooms but in the courtyard caused some confusion. The hotel's position could not be more central and convenient for Farringdon underground station. We found it a little noisy, but then we are unused to an urban environment. My brother's ground-floor room was a little public, and my elderly parents' attic room rather too much of a climb - perhaps they should have been warned. (99330258)

The one big problem that the hotel had when I was there but was not of the hotel's making is the noise outside at 4.30am - 6.00am in the morning as a local nighclub emptied. It was horrendous and did disturb my sleep. This is a real problem that will cause problems for people staying over at the weekend especially. It affected my Sunday night stay but there wasn't a problem on the Monday night (Night club was probably closed) (99764696)

positive comments Nice place with a bit of ye olde world charm.

positive comments Cosy atmosphere. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable room. Friendly staff.
negative comments The sink in the bathroom was old and cracked and modern taps would have been appreciated. Also, a hand-held shower would have been useful in addition to the overhead shower. Shame there is no breakfast room - an English cooked breakfast would have been great.

Janine from West Didsbury, UNITED KINGDOM;GB (Group of adult friends) 10 September 2006

Small, cosy and quirky with individually named rooms after folk who had lived there at one time or another - mine was named Clarice of Cokke Street, a woman of disrepute in the 19th century apparently(!), the hotel has a high standard of decor, lots of antiques and my room had a really comfy bed and air conditioning that worked perfectly. Room service was not overpriced and the food was good. Fluffy white towels and a bathroom with a huge claw foot bath, a rain shower and Aveda toiletries were all designed to make you feel very pampered. Its location on the edge of Clerkenwell with the bars and restaurants of Smithfield Market just around the corner was perfect and Farringdon tube station just a stones throw away. For quiet moments its lounge with honesty bar and courtyard were peaceful and relaxing. A real find for a reasonable price in an extremely convenient location. (3305250625)

Friday night revellers make it impossible to sleep in a room that has windows to the front, the alleyway attracts too many nosiy people who kept us awake all night not helped by the fact that the windows had to be open because the hotel was so hot. (3305158427)

Michael from Birmingham, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 11 May 2006

We booked a weekend expecting it to be quiet, as had been suggested by other feedback. It was not, with noise all the time from passing pedestrians, traffic horns and a front door that banged loudly every time it closed. This disrupted our sleep every night. The hotel was incapable of organising a taxi for us because it was raining! However, the in-room continental breakfast was very good. (3304275871)

positive comments Excellent room and comfortable bed. Lovely bath.
negative comments Very noisy when window was open, but room was hot and stuffy when window closed.

hotel was very sweet and in a great location. the staff were somewhat unfriendly but by no means rude.i found the room cute but very warm, i had to leave the windows open. the furniture were antiques so were beautiful but not amazingly comfortable. on the whole though i prefer this kind of hotel too a big corporate one and to me the less functional aspect of the whole place is part of it's appeal. positive comments Quiet, characterful and well located.
negative comments The room did not have sufficient lighting. A reading light above the bed would be helpful. Also, there was nowhere to put soap, shampoo etc when I was taking a shower. Finally, the TV was too small and the remote control did not work from the bed.

This is a wonderful hotel consisting of beautifully converted historic buildings that are imaginatively decorated and tastefully furnished. The staff clearly care about the hotel, are knowledgeable, attentive and very helpful with suggestions & directions to local points of interest. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfasts are great and the location is so convenient for many attractions. Staying at the Rookery is a really uplifting experience which we'd like to repeat soon. (2773842)

I think it is a ''Gentleman's Hotel.'' Even as that. it would be difficult to read any documents in the room. We were going to an important function and a better light in the bathroom (for make-up) would be helpful. Would have liked a full breakfast menu too. That's all though. It suited us very well for one night. (2536498)

positive comments Charming staff.Beautiful decor. Pleasant position.
negative comments Definitely the room lighting. It was inadequate.

Surrounding area not very pleasant. However my main criteria was to be close to where my appointment was, so in this case knowledge of the area would not have influenced my choice. However, if I was on a leisure break it would have done. I would like to take this opportunity to compliment the staff - they were wonderful. (2424622)

At the weekend, the area is very quiet (very few people in the streets and many shops and eating places closed) but one can sleep with the window open. There are some bars, restaurants or clubs open but they are not noticeable. On Saturday, there are places to eat, including breakfast, but Sunday is more difficult and it is necessary to travel. The tube and buses are near the hotel. (2071611)

positive comments The antique furnishings which makes one feel it is luxurious.
negative comments The breakfast facilities are very poor. One can only have breakfast (continental) in the room as there is no dining room.

Great location for restaurants and bars - quiet on weekend which suited us. Rooms not large, but very interesting features and decor. Great for a romantic weekend, can't see it would be good for business - although again the location is excellent for the City. (2323417)

I booked this hotel on the strength of the recommendations from the reviews, and it lived up to expectations. The breakfast in your room, reading the daily papers, added to the leisurely weekend break that we wanted. The staff were effiecient, helpful and friendly. We would certainly use the hotel again when staying in London. (1901433)

positive comments A quiet hotel, which is convenient for the Tube or walking to sites.

Tony from Hull, United Kingdom;GB (Young couple) 20 April 2005

This is a little out-of-time hotel very convenient for us coming in from the North via King's Cross. Oak and old book decor was very relaxing and quiet and relaxed sums up the general atmosphere - except for late night street noise with the window open. We were late making dinner plans and couldn't get in 'name' restaurants but found good food locally with no problem. (2046093)

positive comments Consistent welcoming atmosphere and ambience.
negative comments Street noise with window open, too hot with it closed.

The Rookery is a slightly quirky, old-fashioned hotel with a club feel. My room was wood-panelled with an excellent deep bath and brass fittings - it gave a nice feeling of comfort and elegance. Food is by room service and my one meal was entirely satisfactory. The man who delivered my supper was pleasant and didn't hover waiting for a tip, for which I was grateful as I feel that these staff should be fully recompensed in their salaries - and I didn't have any change anyway. positive comments Comfortable; pleasant, unobtrusive service; nice bath
negative comments 1 light fitting not working; no television guide

Wonderful small hotel with plenty of charm and warmth and full of period features. The de-luxe double room included 4 poster bed and roll top bath (in separate bathroom) and was extremely spacious. Breakfast was delivered to the room - ideal before setting off for a busy day of sightseeing! Overall, highly recommended to anyone wishing to stay at a hotel with an abundance of character. So close to Farringdon station (really, truly only a couple of minutes' walk). So close to glorious views of St Pauls, the Old Bailey, Fleet Street, Smithfield Market. You could even see the Oxo Tower lit up across the river. Wow - just so close to everything. Tremendous. And the quality of the old-fashioned carvings, pictures, wood. Such shiny copper pipes and brassy bits. And waking up in such a brilliant old bed. Fantastic. (1749675)

positive comments Oldy-worldy with every modern convenience. It felt like a re-wind to Dickens' time. Superb!
negative comments Nothing, zero, null, nichts.

This is a very attractive small exclusive hotel. They have successfully merged the historic with up-to-date services in a very tasteful way - attractive old painting and busts adorn the place. It doesn't offer a restaurant but there are plenty of good restaurants nearby. Breakfast is provided as an in-room service. There is a bar in the lounge which operates on a trust basis - visitors record their drinks etc - as well as well stocked in-room bar/fridge. The in-room safe is easy to use and big enough to be useful. Our London Cabby didn't know the place (good if you want somewhere quiet). Some difficulty mught be experienced by people who have problems climbing stairs as there is no elevator to many of the rooms. (1636159)

positive comments Quiet, very nice appointments, great history, trusted guests. Cab didn't know where it was
