Reception staff very friendly, rooms were spacious and clean
Anonymous (Solo business traveller) 10 March 2008
The room was noisy with the constant of traffic from the road below. External Spot lights on all night. So if you can sleep with constant noise and bright lights this hotel might suit you. The only meal I had in the restaurent was revolving burnt pig's fat in jus. The desk staff spoke to me wehn I arrive and when I left three days later, all very poor

Pleasant setting. Ease of parking. Near to centre. Different type of hotel. Oredered a taxi + it was there straight away. The bathroom was fantastic and really new looking.

Far far too warm and the windows were pinned to stop you opening them more than 3 inches. The check in person shuouted out the room number on check in, not very security concious. The lift felt old + like it was going to give up. The directions on the website were not fantastic.
Graham from Chichester, GB (Solo business traveller) 01 November 2007
Adequate accommodation and the hotel tried hard to provide quality in dismal surroundings.

Very helpful staff.

Old fashioned railway hotel in need of some repair. Dark building outside.

the only fault i encountered was that i did not receive my morning call, and then was charged for two breakfasts. the staff were friendly and courteous. the hotel itself was lovely.

Decor and architechture

Room was very hot, plus someone staying next door to me insisted on slamming their door very loudly periodically during the night meaning i didnt get much sleep.
ian from Maidstone, GB (Solo business traveller) 06 June 2007
Quite a nice traditional hotel. Bar price for wine excessive. Food in restaurant at dinner dire-British hotel cuisine at its worst. Goodness knows what the Continental guests thought of it. You wouldn't get away with this in London. Because of this I wouldn't come back.

location

ordered queen size bed and twin beds actually in room
Kamilia from Bishop's Stortford, GB (Solo business traveller) 16 April 2007
I would have never booked at the hotel if I knew the size and the noise level of the room. the room I stayed in should never be classed as 4 stars. I would put it at less than one star hotel.
(99480849)

Near my conferrence

Room was so small you could hardly move in it. I booked a twin room for one person to have good space in the room. could not set on chair available as no space to move!! Very poor value for money.
Floor boards very squeeky, could hear next door room floor squeeking as well. Sound insulation very poor.

Overall a beautiful hotel. Clean, bright rooms, wonderful decor and a nice restaurant. Close to the bus and train station, but not a great area to walk around, especially at night. The front desk staff need a bit of training on helping out tourists, even a bus schedule would help, and going non-smoking would do a lot for the ambiance.
(3304997039)

The hotel is beautiful, an oasis from the part of Sheffield that is run down and dirty. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with extra pillows and crisp clean bedding. The restaurant is staffed with helpful and polite people who serve a delicious meal.

The front desk staff were not very helpful, we had never been to Sheffield and they could not answer our questions about local transportation or things to do. I was also disappointed to have to pay for the use of WiFi service, and the fact that is was not available in the rooms. Finally the smoking in the common areas really distracted from our enjoyment of the hotel. It made the whole reception area stink of smoke.

Jacqui from Yelverton, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 27 June 2006
I have stayed at other holiday inns which have been brighter, more lively and included breakfast at a reasonable price. This one did not come across as being a popular place to stay it felt soulless and depressing. For an overnight stay it is clean and adequate, the staff were polite and helpful but I don't think I will return.

kimberley from bolton, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 28 April 2006
Everything was lovely part from the restaurant which was a disgrace, the service was ridiculous, the waiter didn't even remember what our starter was and there were only two couples dining! The food when it arrived was burnt and tasteless, to behonest that would explain the dead atmosphere in the dining room, obviously that was a sign that the food and service was going to be like it's atmosphere! The only thing you did about it was take the price of one drink each which we had! Very dissapointing!

Generally a very good stay. no adverse comments. just what I expected from a 4* clasic city centre hotel. This is the second visit and would use again.
(3304372069)

Very good for a Holiday Inn. Room was upgraded free which was good Bathroom was very good. V good shower whioch is essential in a hotel of this class. not always achieved.

Car park security was not operative. City centere hotel should have had some control. They may have felt it made it easier for the guest but I would have prefered if the security system was used
Anonymous (Young couple) 22 February 2006
The Hotel itself is fabulous, and the past times i have stayed booking through Active Hotels we have always had a fabulous room, in line with what you would expect from a 4* establishment. This stay we had a box room next door to a horrendously noisy lift shaft which prevented both myself and my partner from sleeping. The room was also adjoined to the cleaners room, and they were far from quiet to say the least. Then to top off the stay, the chambermaids hammered on the door at 8.30am to service the room!! All in all the decor etc is fantastic, staff wonderful as always but the room totally spoilt our stay. We tried to talk to a duty manager but non were on duty, and the receptionist, though very apologetic could not do anything. It would have been nice to know that the room was small, and next to a lift shaft which would make it noisy stay before we booked, as this would most definitely have stopped us from booking.

Breakfast was excellent, but slightly overpriced compared to the price of the room. Room should have had a fridge in it. The stay was OK value for money for the discounted rate that we paid, but had we paid full price it would have been very poor value.
(3304025219)

new bathroom was the best bit of the accomodation.

Communal areas have seen better days, and there was a slightly stale, smoky smell in hotel.

Reasonable size room, clean, fast in room service, pleasant & helpful greating from reception, breakfast good choice but expensive breakfast,

Hotel decor much to modern & basic for its class. Historic building with a not very suttle very modern interior decor. 'ok for one night'

We both really enjoyed our stay at the hotel and found the reception staff helpful and informative fully explaining to us how to use the trams. We had hoped to use the restaurant to eat in but it did not open in time for us to use it before we had to leave for the evening event that we were attending.
(2877049)

It was originally a railway terminus hotel but it had lost none of its Edwardian charm even though it is part of a large chain of hotels.
Antony from Guildford, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 06 October 2005
The room was very comfortable, the location was very good. Plenty of spaces to park in a secure car park. A building with lots of history but, in tip top condition. Only 3 miles from Medowhall shopping center. And Sheffield city airport.
(2635126)

The building itself is impressive and your general opion doesn't change once inside. The staff without exception were very helpfull. friendly and efficient. Lots of parking and right in the city.

Couldn't find a fault and beleive me if there's one I will find it.
Michael from Hornsea, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 05 October 2005
We had a few problems with room allocation (our room was already occupied) and with noisy neighbours which detracted from our stay. We were 'upgraded' to an 'executive' room but it was very small and cramped and as I have some mobility problems, I had difficulty in manoevering. We usually find that hotels of this kind have more spacious rooms. However, we would stay at the hotel again because of its proximity to Sheffield City Centre. We always try to book via Active Hotels and have always been very satisfied with their service. L.P.

If I stay here again I'll ask for a room on a different side of the building.
(2048676)

Our room was clean and well equipped - but the noise from some sort of industrial plant outside (air-conditioners, or something like that) was very unpleasant during the night and kept me awake. I nearly asked to move rooms but our stay was only short so I didn't bother.

any improvement on dampening - or halting - the machinery noise at night would be good.
Anonymous (Mature couple) 09 August 2005
I did not like the old fashioned check points at the entrance. A modern electronic system would have been more convenient than the token system. At a hundred pounds a night the least we could be given was complimentary breakfast.
(2348543)

There was certainly an appearance of old English charm which one notices coming in and this was further accentuated by the splendid staircase. The room was certainly comfortable.

We felt that the hotel was a bit short on toiletries such as cotton buds and napkins.
