Disappointing.
(107625356)

the staff were generally pleasant.

No room service. Dinner in dining room was Christmas fayre only as a lone female I would not sit in a bar and this was the only option for a meal.

Generally very good, pleasant and reasonable value for money (although breakfast not included in price which would have been nice)
(107500319)

Room well presented, clean and appeared to have been recently decorated

Car parking was very tight, although by late night the car park was almost empty suggesting that it was being used by non hotel guests
Rachel from Crewe, GB (Solo leisure traveller) 12 November 2008
Really enjoyed it would stay again and would recommend

Good room, clean and tidy but poor value breakfast.
(107742415)

Room was clean and tidy

Breakfast was terrible value for money. We had a full breakfast which only had one hash brown, one sausage, beans, egg and two small mushrooms! Definately not worth the

Only really the acoustics that were a problem!
(107451737)

Friendly staff, good breakfast

YOu were woken up whenever someone in a neighbouring room flushed the toilet (this was in the chapeer lodge rooms not the main part of the hotel) so wasn't a very good night's sleep. Also, there was nowhere to put your toiletries when in the shower
David from Kirkby-in-Ashfield, GB (Mature couple) 23 September 2008
Good room and facilities and generally staff were good. Poor bar facilities with early closing on a Saturday night! Would possibly stay again. Good value for money.
(107143275)

Reception staff were excellent could not do enough for us fetching extra milk etc.

Hotel barman was indifferent and seemed as if he just wanted to get off asap. We went back to the hotel about 10.15p.m. after an evening out with family and were asked if we were residents. The bar closed precisely at 10.30 and there were no facilities after that. We had a false fire alarm at 2a.m. which no-one took the trouble to explain or apologise for which again I thought was very rude to just leave guests wondering what had happened and why.
joanne from finedon, GB (Solo leisure traveller) 23 September 2008
Very disappointing stay, would not go back
(107243596)

Arrived to find my allocated room had already been used and not cleaned or made up. Given alternate room that did not have wi fi access as stated when i booked online. Fire alarm went off appx 1.15am and was not sorted by fire brigade until 2am but no member of staff came out to tell us anything in regards to the matter!!

Not a place to be recommended
(108011027)

The noise from the plumbing woke us and kept us awake at least 20 times during the night. It was an unacceptable experience. Generally, the hotel was in serious need of refurbishment. Breakfast is charged at nearly twice the rate that it is served in the restaurant to drop-in visitors. We had an excellent breakfast in spotless surroundings in Morrisons supermarket at a third of the price.
John from Grantham, GB (Solo business traveller) 25 July 2008
The checking in staff and waitresses were very helpfull and polite.
The hotel was clean and facilities generally were good.
Rooms were comfortable.
(107106572)

lovely old market town building with lots of internal character. Very comfortable accommodation. everything worked and room clean and well furnished

The food was diabolical. Very restricted menu (3 choices of main) This is sometimes a good thing as it could indicate that everything is cooked freshly to order. Sadly i think it was more likely due to the fact that the person doing the cooking was inexperienced/useless. I have never in all the hotels i have stayed in had such a diabolical mess presented to me as a meal i was expected to pay for. In fact i didnt pay for the main meal. I only payed for what was an extremely bland Brussels pate and under done toast. There was also a party of eight people on an adjoining table who commented that the food was inedible and did not pay for their main course. What i ordered was gammon with egg and chips (could have been in a transport cafe). What arrived looked like a road traffic accident and something a cobbler had thrown out as unfit for soling shoes with. The chips were a soggy mess as were the onion rings, and along with the mushrooms all had been deep fat fried. You could smell the fat as the meal was being brought to the table. Having paid for a breakfast that was optionali asked the waitress if it would be the same person cooking the breakfast as if it was i would cancel. I was assured that it would be someone different. If it was someone different i cannot belieive that there can be two "cooks" living in or around the same area that are so bad at thier trade. The breakfast was also inedible. It was not just me who had the same opinion as the table of three, adjacent to myself, left thier breakfasts also. I can definately assure you that i would not stop here again unless the standard of quisine improves.Currently it is a criminal waste of perfectly good food.
Joanne from Romford, GB (Solo business traveller) 25 July 2008
I would definitely stay there again.

The staff were very friendly, which as a lone female customer was particularly important to me. The hotel is beautiful, very clean and peaceful. I was especially lucky in rreceiving a free upgrade due to high occupancy levels. Check out was very efficient - far more so than at other hotels.

The web site adverstised the hotel as having free wi-fi, which was very important to me. On arrival however I discovered there were such services available, free or otherwise.
John from TAVISTOCK, GB (Mature couple) 21 July 2008
some good - some poor
(108058151)

Reception staff.
Catering staff in restaurant - 1st night

Catering staff in restaurant - lunch following day - a few more smiles would help.
FOOD standards not so good, cooking poor
Anonymous (Young couple) 16 July 2008
good apart from the booking in experience which was appalling. We booked in on sat 12th and were not made to feel at all welcome due to her demeanour and challenging argumentative tone
(108026093)

when we booked in, the receptionist was exceptionally rude. We had booked via an internet site and had called to alter the reservation from a room with a bath to one without- the receptionist was rude stating we had booked 2 rooms and that someone else could have stayed there and that they had lost money and that we should have cancelled one of the bookings- it was not our fault that the internet service had not cancelled one of the rooms!!

The hotel was very clean, good size room, everything we needed for our overnight stay. Good bar area. The lady who checked us out was very pleasent, great location right in the centre, good night life.

The gentleman who booked us in was misserable and didn't smile once, not good.

Very enjoyable
(108097208)

Decor lovely, Very Clean, Staff Helpful

A La Carte restraunt is not - normal food from bar menu put on as a special menu also closed a 9.00. On internet as 13 km from Alton towers but it is actually 27km a little too far for Alton Towers.
Louise from Bournemouth, GB (Young couple) 01 July 2008
Was very happy with our stay. I left my mobile phone in my room and when I called the lady was very helpful, searched all around for it and left a note for the morning. I was called in the morning and my phone is being posted back to me. Thank you.
(108010112)

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is advertised as being close to Alton Towers but we were surprised at how far away it actually was, our journey time was close to an hour.

Would come again but probably stop in a more luxurious room.

Room was clean enough but needed a bit of a update. Barman was very friendly and helpful in smaller bar.

Room needed an update and bar closed too early.
