Everything about the hotel was extremely pleasant. The decor and paintings in the public rooms were fine and most interesting. The restaurant served very good breakfasts and dinners. The staff, although we had some language problems, were very helpful and friendly in all our dealings with them. The hotel was very well positioned in the centre of Pau, being very near to the shops, market, railway station, bus stops, castle and Art Gallery. (97747742)

It would not be our choice of hotel to stay again due to a much needed make over. This was also the case for our friends room and their comments too. However the staff were very good, friendly and helpfull. A bar facility was not available in the evening which would have been nice. Would only go back if revamped as we ahve had three stays in Pau and this was the least liked hotel.However would reccomend for the service. (99770409)

Replenishment of tea/coffee/hot chocolate supplies in our children's room was not satisfactory, and we also received no supplies for our last night/morning.

A very adequate hotel - Acommodation was very good, hotel is undergoing refurbishment so maybe some rooms are still to be upgraded. Breakfast (Continental) was fine with adequate choice and quantity. Did not try other dining options. It has a good location for access to shops and restaurants and a free car park. Don't try to find it in a car though; central location, ongoing road works,one way system and bus routes make it virtually impossible to drive to direct without good local knowledge. It would have been helpful to have been told of the major traffic changes which had been made in Pau a week or two before we arrived, which left us totally at a loss - the online instructions simply didn't work. We had requested space in the hotel garage but were initially told it was full (we do not think the receptionist was aware of our request) and that we should stay in the nearby underground carpark (which was very close indeed and would have been acceptable if it had been a weekday). This however was going to close at 8.30pm (it was a Saturday) and would not open again until Monday morning, a fact of which the receptionist was, amazingly, unaware. We were due to leave on the Sunday morning and there was no possibility of parking in the street anywhere nearby at that time since the centre of town was exceptionally busy. At this point the receptionist, who was at all times perfectly courteous, became more helpful and let us try our luck in the car park, which had 4 spaces left! Apart from this little story, the main points are as set out above - the hotel has clearly been stylish and rather grand in the past and is superbly situated but is now somewhat run down. This is not a formal complaint; we hope our comments will be helpful to the hotel and to readers as Pau would benefit from having a rejuvenated hotel in this splendid well-situated building. Central location

The room was too hot and there were roadworks near the car park which meant it was difficult to get to and could not be accessed during the day.

The overall ambience is very faded/dated decor and furnishings. The hotel is in need of a total upgrade and redecoration, both exterior and interior. A small minority might hopefully classify it as shabby chic, I would not. With no air conditioning and high temperatures you are forced to open the windows, but being very central the traffic noise is considerable. The restaurant menu is typically boring French. We gave up and ate elsewhere when the restaurant staff kept having to check with the kitchen if our choices were available, which they were not. This hotel is typical of many throughout France. They are shabby and poorly maintained, with similar services. It is time that the French service sector stopped living in the past and ventured into the 21st century. Even a 20th century ambience and service would be nice. The only good things about this hotel were the discounted price, a pleasant reception, which can be difficult to find in France, the room size, and the free garage, although a short distance away, and quite a tight entry for a large car. I would not stay here again. I would rather forego the discounted price. (3304942598)

The web site was pretty comprehensive although it could perhaps have explained one-way streets and where parking would be. The staff were really helpful and polite. Checking in and out easy and efficient and lady showed us where to park although we had arrived two hours before the check-in time of 13.00. Excellent central location with free secure parking. Large comfortable bedroom only let down by shabby small bathroom. The dining area for breakfast was excellent - things replenished regularly (we were not very early at breakfast!)and choice fantastic after stays in french family hotels. We would definitely stay here again but hope it is due for refurbishment! (3304304468)
