Rustic charm with no frills. Breakfast is eaten around a large table with other guests.Location is lovely but some of accomodation needs updating with en-suites, TVs etc.

Character of old castle and grounds

Room was pretty tired, with no TV or en-suite in our room.

Beautiful building and room. Castle and grounds were impeccable

Nothing to dislike
Robert from Hindhead Surrey, GB (Solo business traveller) 26 July 2007
The castle is in a beautiful country setting with an interesting History. There is a fab english breakfast to start your day. There is a pub close by serving lovely evening meals. A fast flowing river just across the roadway. I shall certainly go back at some point. It was lovely
(97420460)

The Bed was most comfortable. The room clean with a good view.
A television room available.

A very nice place to stay but felt a little cut off in the Cottage on my own without a phone and was not able to set up laptop easily for work. I'm sure this would be a great hotel for the leisure traveller.
(99312037)

Grounds were beautiful and room very pretty and comfortable.

Not geared up for business traveller. No phones or TV's in room no mobile phone reception. So a bit cut off and not able to call my Family to let them know I had arrived. Probably great for a leisure stay though.

Our overall stay was absolutely excellent. Quiet romantic setting. Friendly staff. Ample breakfast with a variety of choice. Stunning views over the Valley and River Exe. Only one comment - I would take my own tea bas next time.

The whole atmosphere of the setting. Extremely clean/comfortable bed. Ample space in our room

This was truly a lovely area and our accommodations were charming. The owner was very friendly and shared the history of the castle and the surrounding area with us. We enjoyed that part of our stay very much. I highly recommend visiting this area of Briton this lovely castle.

Beautiful country side location. The fact of being in an environmet with so much history is very appealing.

Charm of the decor and large room.

Not en suite. No luggage racks in the room..

The hotel was very nice but I have not stayed anywhere that had no on suite facilities for many a year and this really did spoil the break for me. The owners were very pleasant. I would recommend the hotel but ensure people knew of the lack of facilities.
(3304839739)

The hotel was beautifully situated. The room was pretty. Breakfast was good

The room we had had no hanging space. No on suite so we had to share a bathroom. No hairdryer. On the first day they forgot to make up our room. We even had to ask for tea making etc. as they hadn't done that either.
Stephen from Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 06 June 2006
Nice comfortable rooms inside individual cottages. Very friendly staff. The hotel is set in beautiful countryside with the river running at the end of the driveway.

If arriving in own car and not too late at night (in order to be able to get dinner in nearby village) this is a particularly wonderful place for a short-stay for the (say) post-40's and educated couple. On this trip, I was travelling with my 18 year-old son, but at some furture date will return when I am travelling only with my wife.
(3304709401)

Unique accommodation and venue experience; magical/historical/peaceful & sanctuary-like location.

Bathroom & W.C. fixtures could have been a little cleaner. Dinner/room-service was not available at this accommodation. This could be a problem for some guests, although for my stay it was not as I had own transport and excellent pub/restaurant (Trout Inn) only about 1-2 miles distant. Breakfast was excellent.
Anonymous (Solo business traveller) 12 May 2006
A truly wonderful place, fantastic surroundings, a great breakfast, friendly guests and lovely owners. Would stay there again and recommend to others. Just a shame about the shared bathroom facilities.

Did not realise that there was not a night porter etc (the description on the web-site leaves you to believe there is) and that the hotel is run as a family business and as such there are no late night facilities, bar etc, however this was far out-weighed by the friendly welcome, hospitality and general ambiance
(3304347833)

Extremely friendly welcome especially as I was the only guest arriving after 10pm. The setting was exceptional and although the photo's on the web site look beautiful but they do not do the location justice. A distinctly different Hotel

A wonderful location. I was surprised to find that there were no en-suite facilities, which could have been a problem if there were more guests. A lack of a TV in the room was also a surprise, although not a problem for me, but could be for other guests. Breakfast served in the family dining room was excellent and very friendly.
(3304132564)

Location was excellent. Somewhat eccentric but pleasing.

More ensuite rooms
Anonymous (Solo leisure traveller) 21 December 2005
Met my expectations - exceeded in some respects. Would stay again with my wife if they had en suite bathrooms. If not - probably look elsewhere
(3304052931)

The location. The history of the building. The rooms. Friendly host.

The bathrooms were not en suite and were well below the decor standard of the bedrooms themselves
Michele from Stroud, United Kingdom;GB (Family with young children) 02 November 2005
No ensuite facilities breakfast is served in their own dining room. No tvs in room. Also the fact that you have to take your shoes off as you go into the property! Not geared up as a hotel, good for wedding parties.
(2886948)

The surroundings and history were great.

Although it was nice meeting the owner and having to share breakfast with him we would have liked the choice as the we did feel uncomfortable. The owner had also forgotten to write as in as coming so they were not expecting us, although she did apologise. The rooms are too basic, no television poor tea/coffee facility and no ensuite. Our bathroom was upstairs and very out of date! Need to be more flexible for breakfast we were offered 8 or 9 when we really wanted a lie in. Check out was 11 but when we got back to the room at 10 the room was already being changed by a very unhappy maid. The owner did then give us a tour and some history, after us asking, which made it a bit better.

we stayed in a three bedroomed cottage along side the castle. the bedroom was lovely and washing facilities were adequate, but we would not have been as comfortable if we had been sharing the cottage with strangers. ideal for families or a group of friends as expected in a wedding party booking. the castle was beautiful and the bridal suite was absolutly gorgeous, would like to stay in there next time. breakfast was faultless and delicious.
(2790649)

comfortable room

ensuite facilities are a must in any hotel but would not be expected in the castle or cottage buildings.
Graham from Colwich, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 16 September 2005
I generally felt that I was a nuisance rather than a guest, although staff did arrange an earlier than usual breakfast which did make some amends.
(2741108)

Outwardly very picturesque

Accommodation is 'tired' and would benefit from modernisation - including change to en suite
William from Upminster, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 09 September 2005
Enormous potential for visitors if the facilities in the rooms were improved. One toilet/shower room shared between three bedrooms is hardly ideal in this day and age. No tv or radio and one semi easy chair in the bedroom is inadequate.

I visited Bickleigh Castle 20 years ago aged 10 as part of a school trip. I loved it then, and am pleased to say that I still love it 20 years later. We were very impressed with the owner, Rob, opening up the bar for us especially so we could enjoy a bottle of wine with glasses and corkscrew outside on a warm summer evening. If you want all the latest mod-cons, go somewhere else. If you want peace and quiet in a beautiful environment, this is the place for you ! Whilst not the making of Bickleigh, I loved the fact that in the depths of this Devon valley my phone had no signal whatsoever and gave me no choice but to sit back, relax and enjoy the experience. A much needed refreshing break. Thank you everyone at Bickleigh !

We hadn't realised that we would not be able to eat dinner at the hotel and had a long wait at a pub in the village, as it was a bank holiday.
(2683125)

Fantastic location, tranquil and relaxing. Good quality sheets.

The room was very small
William from New Baltimore, United States;US (Mature couple) 19 August 2005
The castle is secluded and has all the peacefulness one could want. The hosts have done a supurb job with the restoration and should be commended on that. If I were a King, the Bickleigh would be my castle. I haven't had such a pleasant time for many years and would do it all over again without any hesitation.
(2623027)

The castle didn't have televison or phones in the room which was a plus especially for peace and quiet. It was just awesome and would recommend it to everyone.

Just a little more time for breakfast, since the beds are so comfortable that you don't want to leave them.

Location and appearance

Overall the hotel was lovely. The owners were very helpful and polite. It was a beautful setting that was steeped in history. A very good place to stop off on the way down to Cornwall.

I would have liked to do the tour of the castle, chapel and grounds but will definitely return for that.
The sheer peacefulness of the place really was a tonic and I will stay for longer next time.
I really wouldn't have wanted to know anything before I booked as the surprise that the whole place held for me when I arrived was fantastic.

John from Wirral, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 11 June 2005
A fantastic location in wonderfully quiet surrondings no ensuite rooms due to grade 1 listing, but the place its self makes up for that. An evening meal facility would be nice but there are 2 pubs in village that serve meals some 7-10 minute walk away. No televisions in the rooms but there is a television room seperate. Family run by a family that really cares about the Castle/hotel. breakfast was delicious. Cant wait to go back as a leisure visitor next time.
