Too cold to stay at within the winter months.
(107872723)

The staff were very profesional, friendly and happy to help with any queries/requests
The food was of a very high standard, the evening meal served was excellent.

The hotel in places was quiet cold, especcially in the bedroom. (the bathroom radiator did not work at all) On nights where the weather drops below freezing
this is not acceptable considering the cost of the stay, It was obvious to see that cut backs were being applied in the areas of gas & electric, but this should not be at the expense of paying guests,as it is not 'chep' to stay there in the first place.

Most relaxing & enjoyable.
(107930431)

Very friendly staff, but not overfamiliar. Quiet hotel. Lovely large room.

Would have liked to have our room serviced on the Sunday as it was the one full day we were there. Would have been nice not to have had to make a bed for once & had clean towels.

Excellent value for money, high standard of accomodation
(107533181)

High standard of rooms, location of Hotel

Restaurant fairly expensive but good
Anonymous (Mature couple) 21 November 2008
I would ask for room 10 again - liked the spacious room but not sure about the waterfall type of bath - it makes hair washing a bit difficult ie you have to kneel on the floor and hang over the side of the bath under the flow of water
(107623957)

welcoming and friendly - very happy to lend us maps, walking books etc which we appreciated

although we were not there to watch TV it would have been nice to at least tune it in to watch the news - a less complicated system would be better

Hotel has a good feeling overall and would recommend.
(107753535)

Food in bar lovely. Decor welcoming and overall room standard good.

Cleanliness in bathroom was not up to expected standard - i.e; floor/corners/taps etc.
Continental breakfast was below par for restaurant standard. Expected warm homemade croissants/pastries not supermarket shelf.
Thought 10:30am checkout was a bit early!

Overall good, bathroom facilities need looking at. Would possibly recommend hotel , can't really say i would, or would not.......
(97702722)

Room was good, the bed very comfortable

The En-Suite facilities were a bit tired. The water was not very hot. The taps did not convert from bath supply to Shower supply properly which left an inadequate pressure to the shower supply. More water was being supplied/wasted to the bath than was going to the showerhead. The Heated towel rail had no heat to it. In fact, the electrical connection had been Bodged Up with some black insulation tape and looked borderline on being in a dangerous state. The windows had a towel rail but ne curtains which left a sense of a lack of privacy when using the bathroom during darkness. I know this is minor but only one out of the two ceiling lights worked which left the shower in the dark once the curtains were closed. I did not voice any complaints during my visit and realise that maybe i should have voiced some concerns at the time. If i had been stopping for more than 1 night then i may have been more inclined to have said something. The evening meal was good. The breakfast was quite good, i would have graded it as very good if everything had not been overcooked. We were both fortunate to own our own sets of teeth because if we had false ones then i think we may have struggled to have got through it !

Very good food, extremely funny waiter. Nice superior double room with lots of space and very clean.

The website advertised drop-off service for walkers and made it sound as if we could get information about walking in the Peak District, but since the renovations the hotel seems to be focusing more on events such as weddings and away days, and we were directed to the Hathersage tourist office for information on walking - but there is no tourist office in Hathersage! Also when the room was cleaned the tea and toilet paper were not replenished, nor were we given fresh glasses in the bathroom

We were generally satisfied with our stay and consider we got good value for money.
(99954156)

View from our room.
Aura of quality
Food was good
Plenty of parking

No fruit on offer at breakfast
Leak in shower unit
Lack of power in shower
Sometimes difficult to communicate with staff
Anonymous (Mature couple) 21 April 2007
Food was excellent. Small friendly hotel. Decor and presentation in common areas better than in the rooms. Excellent value for money booked as a package. Would be more than happy to stay here for a few nights as abase to further explore the Derbyshire countryside. Staff were approachable and helpful.
(99948784)

The overall feel. The view. The seperate rooms.

Clock was wrong and couldn't be changed. Windows condensensed over which
obstructed the excellent view.

We would have liked to have known how they are ruined the interior of the hotel, its like a spaceship inside and a beautiful old building outside! The bar was like any other bar in any city and felt very average.
It was impossible to get any service at reception, there was never any one at the reception desk duing our entire stay! It seems so weird, surely they are aware that first impressions last. The restaurant manager was nice though, very chilled, everyone else was non english speaking or not around!
(99493691)

We loved the exterior of the hotel, its a beautiful old building. The food was very nice.

Unfortunately they had modernised the interior of this beautiful old hotel, it looked bizzare and cheap. The staff were dreadful, there was never anyone on reception, it felt like we were asking for too much when we just wanted to check in!!!
david from oahkam, GB (Mature couple) 13 April 2007
A charming location, the staff are really helpful and friendly. Nothing is a problem to them. The shower in our room was tepid on the first day and that is my only niggle. The hotel appears very popular as a wedding venue. I can understand why, the food in the restaurant or the bar is excellent and the staff really go that extra mile to make sure you are happy. We personally would recommend the Maynard for good value and good old fashioned service!

We could not fault the attentiveness of staff who were exceedingly helpful (we were the only guests on the first night of our stay). The food was excellent and not expensive. Some disarray downstairs with refurbishment in progress but this did not cause any problems at all. Smoke from the bar did drift into the dining area - but this will not be a problem when the new legislation comes into force in July and may not be a problem when the refurbished rooms are back in general use.

I wish we could have stayed longer at this hotel. Beautiful old Victorian hotel. Some furnishings seen better days but I think that contributes to its lovely relaxed atmosphere. Staff laid back and friendly. Breakfast beautifully done-perfect tablecloth, service, excellently presented food eaten in a room overlooking lovely scenery.
We were going into Sheffield for a concert and the manager took great pains to draw us a map and explain the easiest route.
My only niggle was the less than hot shower. Otherwise great.
(99325308)

Lovely old building. Relaxed and comfortable. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast.

Showers disappointingly lukewarm.
Ian from Peterborough, United Kingdom;GB (Family with young children) 04 November 2006
The hotel was let down by the issues surrounding the lack of hot water and poor service.
In particular there was only 1 person serving at breakfast and this was obviously insufficient particularly at busy times.
There was never anyone on reception and retrieving our room key became a problem, only solved by not handing it in !
(3305468380)

Breakfast conservatory has wonderful views of the valley and food was generally of a high standard

Due to problems with the boilers we had no hot water for two mornings. There was only ever 1 person serving at breakfast.

Our overall opinion of the hotel was good but it was let down by a few minor issues, eg staff weren't around when checking in or out also bar left unattended so had to wait for drinks. Overall cleanliness was good but the bathroom was grubby, shower curtain very dirty and sink not clean. The shower also did not work very well.
(3305107468)

The room was very large with excellent views and the food was very good, great location

No one on reception when checking in or out, shower curtain dirty and bed linen very worn.
Anonymous (Mature couple) 18 August 2006
Lovely food, the restaurant was top class. Friendly staff, nothing too much for them. The room had been upgraded to a suite, which was a nice surprise.
Will probably go back again to explore the region and will use this hotel as a base.

In general I was very happy with the facilities provided by the hotel. It is clear that the hotel needs some updating in both the fabric of the building and in the level of service, but at the price point everything was acceptable.
(3304990615)

The hotel was a generally clean, friendly family hotel.

The music played in the public spaces was too repetative. I don't think I can face Norah Jones anymore!

Nice big room with amazing views. Choose to have food from bar menu instead of eating in restaurant. One meal was excellent and one was very poor. Spoke to waiter who quickly got the manager The manager delt with the matter very well, immediately advising us we would not be charged for the meal and buying us a drink.
