We were very impressed with the hotel & the service, our room was very good as was the food we had a sandwich at lunchtime which was excellent as we asked for a special one & we got it! we had an evening meal which was very good value for money, then breakfast was excellent!! We would most certainly stay t your hotel again if we were in the area & we have already given your name to some realatives that often stay up in the area.
Thankyou for a wonderful stay.

Hotel was good, but thought room rate was high for such a room at the top of the hotel, which required us to carry suitcases up many fliughts of stairs
(108080993)

Excellent restaurant and menu

Bed required a new mattress as it was dipping in the middle.
The tiles in the bathroom required cleaning, as those near the top were dirty

Excellent, faultless staff, nice location and good food in the main restaurant and bar.
(97117583)

Staff were excellent, very friendly and when a cab couldn't be found to take me to the wedding reception venue one of them offered to drive me there in their own car after their shift.

None really, although my room was on the small side for a double, but this wasn't an issue as I wasn't there to stay in the room all day!

We were unfortunate to stay at the same time as a coach load of other people and the Hotel seemed to cater for their needs first and other guests afterwards. The bar was only manned on an ad hoc basis although a staff member could be summoned by the ringing of a bell. The evening meal was a little disappointing in both choice and quality and the breakfast was what was left after the aforementioned coach party and there did not seem to be a staff member available to ask for fresh eggs. Having said all this the Hotel is in a beautiful location and with a little tender loving care I'm sure the standard can be raised and if it is then I would recommend it to others but at the moment I cannot.

Location and outward appearance

The Hotel seemed a little tired and in need of redecoration
Anonymous (Mature couple) 19 May 2008
Knowing what was booked at the hotel would have been useful. I.e. wedding etc.

warm, nice staff

very very noisy cattle grid, marquee ten feet from room good job there was nothing on. Small bed.
Howard from London, GB (Mature couple) 22 April 2008
The Hotel was interesting in itself with its history and the important role it has in the centre of the Forest of Dean. The staff were friendly and courteous. We were able to enjoy a meal with our guests in the bar.
The breakfast was comprehensive, but I did not like the 'mushy' baked beans!
Altogether, though we would like to thank you for a pleasant two-night stay.
(97015430)

The room was cosy, warm and clean, and quite comfortable. The tea, coffee and nightcap facilities were appreciated.

There was a tap in the shower/toilet room which was not properly secured and the light pull did not always work first time.On the first night of our stay there was no outside light between the main building and our room.

We were most disappointed with the status of the decor and the atmosphere. We were expecting to enjoy a historic house which had 'opened its doors to the public 'but we were let down by the poor state of the building and decoration Much is made of its location but in the hotel there was no info on local walks in the forest.
(97638510)

The hotel was clearly very historic with an interesting story. The room was of a good size. Bed was very comfortable

The hotel didn't make enough of its history with the main rooms, reception, bar and restaurant looking very tired and in need of decoration and renovation. The historic restaurant lacked atmosphere. There were tables and furniture stored at the bottom of staircases etc making everything look rather untidy/uncared for. Our room need redecorating - lots of cracked tiles in the bathroom, the windows needed painting and making more draft proof. The toilet roll holder and wc flush were falling off the wall. The bar area was poor. Although it was cold there were no fires burning.

We spent very little time at the hotel and I must say I would have liked to stay longer. The location was brilliant in the middle of the Forest of Dean. I would probably go back there due to the brilliant location.

Room was excellent. Bed was comfortable.
Reception did react very quickly when lights tripped in room

Service was below expectations. Little or no effort to inform re other services including breakfast. Bar service was abysmal, we had to ask at reception to be served 4 times and the pints/half pints were not topped up. Food service at breakfast and dinner was poor - we had to ask for sauces and there was little interest from the staff as to whether we were happy with the meal. Breakfast was poor (rubbery mushrooms, coffee had at least been through 2 or 3 percolations -no taste!
Roger from Henley-on-Thames, United Kingdom;GB (Solo leisure traveller) 15 November 2006
Very good - but didn't particularly like the self-service breakfast. This may have been because they were very busy.

It is a shame that the lack of simple maintenance marred an otherwise very pleasant stay.We will return but will be more thorough in inspecting the room before unpacking.
(3304889562)

excellent location,very friendly staff.superb food,clean room

poor response for maintenance requests. On arrival we lifted the toilet seat and it fell on the floor the fixing housing on the seat was broken & it was obvious it had just been placed in position but was not secure. It was reported to reception, the next morning, along with a request for a new bulb for the shaving light & lubrication to an extremely squeaky shower door.We returned that evening to find that the light still did not work, the shower still squeaked and the same toilet seat had been reasembled & immediately fell apart on lifting the seat!

The brochure underplayed the quality of the food which was of high standard and obtained from local sources. many visitors would like to take walks in close proximity to the hotel, we did not find out about a particular walk with the sculptures until we were leaving, Th number of different brochures made it impossible to assess the offerings

The character of the hotel made it much more enjoyable that staying in a modern building.

We arrived later than expected and so missed dinner (finished at 9pm). We had expected to still be able to order room service but this also stopped at 9pm.
