It was the nearest we could find for an early start the next day. It sufficed and even though the beds were not the best, we slept.
Car park treacherous in the Ice - completely untreated.

A very friendly atmosphere; extremely courteous and friendly staff; excellent food (range, quality & quantity); clean well prepared room; good in room facilities eg coffee/tea making with biscuits & sweets; help from staff with plans for the following day; helpful staff in terms of an early departure

Central heating not working in the bedroom - didn't have a serious effect on our stay.

The true distance from Durham. The true star rating, if the hotel was nice clean & cosy.
(97353533)

Food OK

Wiring on Electrical appliances joined with insulation tape, sink dropping off wall, general feeling of uncleanliness, too far from Durham - bus fare

The hotel is situated on a main road, with easy access to car parking.

Access to the room was difficult with suitecases, as stairs were steep and narrow. The facilities were adequate, but the room smelt of dampness. There was no written breakfast menu. The hotel was not well kept.

The couple who own the Gables are friendly and have created a unique experience which makes everyone feel welcome and part of the community, no matter the length of stay. The owner is an excellent entertainer and knows how to deliver both jokes and magic tricks.

If you are looking for overnight accommodation then this hotel is quite adequate. It's friendly and clean. Our room overlooked the road but it was not particularly noisy. The bar downstairs looked cosy but was empty when we were there. There is a car park behind the premises.

It would have been helpful to know that most of the local taxi firms were unavailable at 8.45 onwards for school runs. A card representing local firms who could be contacted and able to provide a reliable service would be most helpful

It was all that was promised except the evening meal. This was unavailable due to the proprietor's wife being in hospital. The host gave us excellent information about where we could eat nearby and then he and his customers entertained us after our meal with local talk and information. This was not five star accomodation but clean, friendly, efficient, basic stuff, especially in the light of the host's situation at the time.
(3304145309)

The situation was peaceful and near enough to the city. It was clean, friendly and the locals were amiable, giving us useful information.Parking was easy and plentiful.

It is under renovation at the moment and the lack of evening meals was down to the proprietor's wife being in hospital so I don't feel able to make constructive criticism here.

The Gables is in desperate need of updating. The bedrooms were clean but lots of peeling wallpaper, scuffed paint and threadbare carpets gave an overall appearence of been shabby and uncared for. The lock on bedroom 4 was very dodgy and we were told to waggle it to get it to work. The guest bathroom looked as if it had recently been updated, but sadly to a very poor standard. The toilet flush was loose and wouldn't flush adeqately, there were no blinds up at the window, so at night it lacked privacy and the door wouldn't shut properly. There was only one handle on the bathroom door which was held on by 3 screws and the lock was useless, first because the door wouldn't shut and secondly as there was nowhere to slide the bolt into. My Husband stood guard when I went for a bath! The price that is charged at the Gables does not reflect the standard of the rooms and facilities which is very poor. We expected basic rooms but were dissappointed with what we got.
(2901440)

The rooms we had were clean, although very shabby, and the breakfast was good.

Desperately in need of some TLC in regards to decoration and facilities. A smile on the waitress's face would have been nice!!

Over the last 5 years we consider that we have become seasoned and experienced travellers having stayed in some 25-30 hotels of all standards; from small Guest Houses in the UK & small pensions in Italy and France through moderately sized hotels in the UK, Europe and North America to the large international hotels in New York and Canada. Whilst the latter group do not bear comparison , the first group are cetainly in tension with The Gables. Out of all the hotels we have stayed in, in terms of overall comfort and value for money, we would rate The gables firmly in the bottom two. The only other contender for bottom slot would be a pension in Venice, even this one boasted a chilled orange juice server. At The Gables the breakfast orange juice was waiting for us on the table when we arrived for breakfast, normally around 8:15-8:30, breakfast commenced at 7:30, the orange juice appeared to have been on the tables since 7:30, so was well warm when we arrived. The room contained a double bed, and had little space to move beyond the confines of it. The TV was adequate, and the provision of tea & coffee facilities welcome, albeit the kettle being of uncertain age. the landlord was at pains to point out that the toilet worked on a vacuum system and only bodily excretions should be deposited in it, and it needed a lot of water. In fact we had great difficulty in disposing of our bodily waste, added to which the noise of the vacuum must have carried through to the surrounding rooms. This made it an embaressment to us when we had to use it at night. In the end we resorted to leaving it unflushed. The sink also appeared to work through the vacuum, meanig that we could not even wash our hands or clean our teeth without the noise of the vacuum. the only saving grace in the bathroom was that it did indeed contain a bath in addition to the expected shower, and there was ample hot water.
(2403443)

Plenty of hot water

Plumbing, presentation of breakfast, size of room, no smoking in bar next door to dining area.

The bathroom/WC had no working door lock, and the bedroom door lock was very awkward. Curtains were not very effective as they were too thin with 3000W of lights glaring from the carpark. Main entrance smelt very musty and probably has wet or dry rot. Breakfast could have been good but was marred because it was cooked sometime before we sat down. How else could it have been served in less than one minute? As a result, the bacon was like cardboard. At c.£25pp for B&B, the hotel was very cheap, but some simple improvements would make a big difference in customer satisfaction.
