Poor sounding proofing between floors

The Somerville was a wonderful experience. Excellent location and facilities. Made to feel very welcome by all staff who were very helpful and pleasant. Food and facilties are excellent - cant fault it. Our stay was far better than we could have imagined and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone planning a visit to Jersey. Twin Beds!

Had a really good stay. Lovely location with views across the harbour and bay, excellent standard of food and service very good. Can't wait to return to the same hotel. Located in a lovely harbour town with a mixture of good local restaurants, pubs plus access to the beautiful countryside of that part of Jersey. (99778968)

The hotel was recommended by the people I was visiting and booked by my PA so can't answer reasons for choice or booking details or ease of booking on line or otherwise. The computer had malfunctioned and, unlike my experience with other hotels when this has happened, it in no way seemed to affect the service to guests. I had a friendly welcome and the room service young man was particularly helpful both when I ordered and when the food was served. He was very helpful on the choice of food, size of portions and a light meal was put together from several items on the room service menu, ordered over the phone and at a modest cost. I stay in a lot of hotels and it seemed the staff here really know about service and the business they are in (i.e. guest comes first) - this is by no means common. There was a 'can do' atmosphere. I had not considered visiting Jersey as a holiday destination but would certainly do so now and would consider staying at this hotel. Only drawback on the catering front was no full breakfast available at business starting hours but expect this is inevitable with holiday hotel. Also, I did know about this in advance and continental breakfast was served in room at an earlier hour very promptly and with good selection. From what little I could tell from the evening room service meal the chef appears to know what he is doing. Again, this is not always a 'given'. Perhaps it is due to being so close to France. Great views! Food sounded wonderful on the menu but in fact was not that special except for the lobster which was good. Our room was very noisy and smelly being just above the kitchens, we did not complain as we were only there for two nights, had the stay been a longer one we would have wanted to change rooms. The whole hotel needs a good 'makeover' as it looks very 'tired' and rather shabby. There was a sweet paper in the Ladies toilets which stayed there the whole time we were there indicating that it was not cleaned or inspected!

Please see my comment re what I liked about the hotel. Really I couldn't fault the hotel. It's in a superb location and is well run and organised. My main concern was that my mother wouldn't have too many stairs to negiotiate or be too far from the lift. When I mentioned this to the front desk on arrival their response was please check the room and if you are not happy we'll find you another. The room was actually fine but I was impressed by their helpful attitude when they were clearly busy. Perhaps for elderly people a bath stool would be a useful optional extra, but that was the only thing we lacked to make our stay perfect. (2075609)

It was clean, tastefully decorated, and comfortable. All the staff were pleasant and helpful. I was accompanying my elderly mother and we were made to feel most welcome. The somerville is a lovely hotel with a super atmosphere and the food in the restaurant was delicious and service excellent.

The only thing I could fault was that no one came to pull down the beds in the evening/afternoon and the bed covers were very heavy, (my elderly mother couldn'thave managed them easily on her own) but perhaps that is a practice that has been discontinued?

Poor lighting in room

Overall hotel and staff good, with top location and views. A good base for the island, with plenty of local restaurants and walks. On the downside, the room was poor quality, in need of modernisation. Bathroom facilities very old and therefore a bit tired, although clean. I would have prefered to see more details of the bedrooms before I booked to have known what to expect. (1639871)
