Miserable Breakfast.
Karen from Hrnchurch, GB (Mature couple) 15 July 2008
It met the needs for a one night stay.
(97708833)

Local to the wedding venue; pretty hotel and pretty village.

I found the temporary location of the reception to be poorly identified; the receptionist was not aware of special request for early check in - made via 2 x telephone calls and e-mail; she could not find the keys and appeared harrassed and flustered by our arrival; the fire doors leading to our room were covered in dirty finger prints, this continued into our room where the fingerprints were evident on the inside and outside of the room door, the bathroom; there were scuffs and dirty marks on the wall next to the toilet and on the bath panel; the air conditioning did not work - stated Fault 02; the shower was extremely weak and I found the mixer taps to have more force and so used this instead. There was inadequate lighting to apply make up and I had to remove the lamp shade on the dresser to improve this. The 'superior' rooms in the court yard area looked very quaint; the garden was very pretty and the village of Old Amersham very pretty. The breakfast choice was wide but the waiter did not deliver the requested egg choice and the continental choice was limited at the appointed time we arrive - no cheese, no croissant and only 2 flavour choices of yoghurt.

We would choose the Crown again. We liked the staff, the room and the breakfast.
(108030155)

Charming and helpful receptionist who apologised for the renovations which were taking place. Very pleasant room and bathroom (116). Recetionist offerd help with suitcases and to change our room as the air conditioning was noisy. We chose not to change as we liked the room and were able to open windows.

Sorry we were not able to see the hotel in its renovated state

The hotel is beautiful, as is the town, albeit very quiet! The staff were delightful and very helpful throughout our stay. We happened to be upgraded - the room was spacious, clean and elegant with a very comfy bed! Breakfast the next morning was lovely with lots of choice.
We were going out that night so didn't have a chance to try the evening menu, which looked great on paper. Hopefully we'll stay there again.
Only thing which would have been of use was to know that some of the rooms are outside the hotel in a courtyard block. We were upgraded to an outside room which was lovely, but some people may prefer to be in the main building.

Booked for my wifes birthday present as she was is a fan of the film 4 weddings and a funeral and of Hugh Grant, we stayed in the room used in the film.
Steven from Milton Keynes, GB (Mature couple) 20 February 2008
Great historic building and location, shame that the hotel did not take advantage of the potential. We had a free upgrade to an executive room but this seemed only just adequate as a standard and was quite small. Bar and restaurant areas cold and unwelcoming. I only ever saw one couple eat there during our two day stay. Freezing cold weather (February nights down to -6) but only one fire lit and that was on the verge of going out - not as advertised. Breakfast was a dismal affair with underdone toast served 20 minutes before the poorly prepared cooked breakfast arrived. Tea was like hot water and to a person every guest asked for an extra tea bag - a cost saving exercise gone mad. No newspappers avilable, either to be deliver to rooms or in the hotel, perhaps it was just too much bother, which seems to sum up our impression of our stay.

Everything. The hotel is a wonderful place to stay whether it be for business or pleasure.
Anonymous (Solo business traveller) 12 February 2008
The hotel building is exactly what you see, a beautiful old English structure, however, I stayed in a what looked like a converted barn out the back in the car park. Décor was old and tired, Bed linen was stained (although laundered), no hot water on one morning, staff were foreign and therefore (probably inadvertently due to language difficulties) were rude at times, although the service in the bar and at breakfast was good, The restaurant was taken over by a single party on one night
and closed to other residents, who were catered for in the bar. Didn't use the restaurant after that and stuck with bar meals which were OK.

Wonderful building

Décor was old and tired, Bed linen was stained (although laundered), no hot water on one morning, staff were foreign and therefore (probably inadvertently due to language difficulties) were rude, dismissive and offered poor service.

Comfortable room well serviced by staff.

Some room (22) equipment (TV remote) was inoperative. Also the room was noisy due to ongoing renovation work in surrounding areas.

The Crown has a lot of charm and the rooms are lovely and comfortable, fitting in with the overall look of the hotel very well. The rooms were well heated and had everything we needed, including tea-making facilities and a good shower (I didn't find a hairdryer but as I didn't need one this was not an issue for us).
The check-in and out was disorganised as there was only one person at the reception desk performing all tasks meaning we had to wait some time. There was also a lot paperwork that had to be filled in for each room (even though we were paying for all of them).
Breakfast was adequate with a good choice, although the service was poor and slow.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay and I would recommend The Crown if you want to stay in a picturesque hotel in a lovely village (but not if you need top-class service).
(97333534)

The hotel was charming, the rooms were beautifully decorated, comfortable and clean. Ample parking.

Check in and check out was disorganised and service for breakfast was bad.

We had to book the accommodation in a hurry & it all worked very well at a most difficult time. We had not planned to be away so close to Christmas. It was also good to be able to park the car without bother. Thank you. I would not hesitate to recommend the Hotel to others.

The building is beutiful, very old and appropriately decorated for Christmas. Rooms are, as a result of the age of the hotel, smaller than average, but perfectly adequate

Accomodation was fine - very comfortable bed!

I was very pleased with the stay and accommodation. The staff especially were very pleasant and responsive whilst not being intrusive.
(97556312)

The best thing was the staff who were very friendly, responsive and pleasant.

I asked for as quiet a room as possible and my room was over the street but as I booked quite late I expect there was no alternative
Jonathan from Upper Norwood, GB (Young couple) 27 November 2007
Very very good experience, both of Active Hotels and the Crown. I mixed the date up on my booking form, and this was revised without incident or charge with one phone call. Exeptional value for money.
(97765225)

The staff were very friendly, the room was an excellent standard, the food was first rate and the whole ambience was fantastic.

The shower was not powerful enough, and there was no remote control for the TV, but they were very minor points.

The Crown is an old hotel in the very pleasant town of Old Amersham. The Hotel was very nice and I should imagine the quaintness would appeal greatly to American tourists. It was quite a long walk to our room and would certainly not be suitable to the less mobile. Our room, although pleasant, was a bit on the small side and I did not like the way that the bed leaned to the right hand side due to the uneven floor. As I said this would be a great hotel for those looking for an old place with a bit of history but I would prefer a larger modern room. Furnishings and bedding very nice. TV reception in room was poor. Breakfast was included but the continental buffet table was not particularly inspiring and the smoked haddock that my husband had was miniscule. I had the traditional English breakfast which was served on a boiling hot plate, the egg was still cooking(!) and was very small compared to most English breakfasts.
(99109837)

The hotel was old and would appeal to American tourists. The grounds were nice although there was no opportunity to sit outside for a drink as the weather was so bad. Everyone was very polite and courteous.

The floor in the bedroom was uneven, due to the age of hotel, not comfortable to walk on.

character of hotel, cleanliness, tasteful decor, good facilities, comfy bed

Room - no socket near kettle so had to move it! Ditto for iron/board.
Susan from Swansea, GB (Young couple) 20 June 2007
The hotel seems to be split into two sections, one traditional and one modern. If you are unlucky enough to be in the modern section, be prepared to walk across the courtyard and car park to get to your room. I was very disapointed with the cleanliness of the room, especially the Bathroom. There was no hot water available for a shower/bath. We had to queue to get a table for breakfast, when finally seated and after 45 mins, our cooked breakfast had not arrived. Staff efficiency and quality of service was abysmal. Was so disappointed- this hotel stay should have been a real treat.
(99017485)

Great location in Old Amersham

No hot water available for bath/shower. Waited 45 mins for a cooked breakfast as only one chef was on duty.
Julian from Beverley, GB (Mature couple) 09 June 2007
The hotel was just what we expected to find in this lovely village of Old Amersham. It must be very expensive on maintenance and up keep but try to preserve the charactor of the hotel.
(99340993)

Location wonderfull setting

The complete lack of any management bar had very poor selection the only bitter was off. This was a 50th wedding do and expected the heating was on full and not turned off until about 8pm so was very uncomfortable inside the hotel,The level of service was appaling English was not the first language of all of the staff so simple requests were not understood we had a hour wait for breakfast and by the time mine came they had run out of several items. This is by far the worst level of service I have had at any hotel.

Character of the building

The bedroom directly over the bar can be noisy and the car park was very difficult to locate for first time users. I was also charged for two calls which I made to 0800 numbers, ie., free phone numbers. These charges were later removed from my bill but only after I complained.

The Crown is a lovely place to stay, particularly if it's a romantic setting your after. The halls and rooms have an old world charm, no straight lines, tasteful decoration, it has 'character'. Although we got the room as a cheaper deal, we were treated like we were in the Bridal Suite. We loved every minute of our stay. The only fault I could find about the whole of our stay was the telly didn't have very good reception... but we didn't watch much!
