Unhappy with stay - more focus should be placed on the rooms, cleanliness, welcome & assisting clients. (97121402)

positive comments Restaurant good - attentive staff - meal well presented - excellent service
negative comments We wanted to have a room with a view - we were leaving London to be in the countryside & chose the hotel for that reason - our view from both windows was of the carpark. That meant lights shining into the room & doors slamming!!We were next to a public ladies toilet when it was flushed the noise was right at our bedhead & it was an unpleasant way to be woken during the night. The rooms opposite us had families and used tthe toilet during the night. We were not shown to our room on arrival nor offered assitance with our luggage - rather cavalier treatment. There were toenail clippings on the bathroom floor & mildew behind the bath taps. The room was not cleaned well enough at all!! The kingsize bed was actually 2 singles placed together which is not a very comfortable option.

Pleasant location. Even though we had to wait what seemed to be a very long time for the first course, the evening meal we shared with friends was excellent. (97456862)

positive comments Location
negative comments Unpleasent hum at night, from lights outside perhaps? Room service for breakfast was, apart from the first day, not very good. This caused me to stumble on stairs, agravating a recent back injury.

The breakfasts were as good as any with a fantastic choices. We dined three times and had good well presented food. (99526990)

positive comments The Bear is situated in a beautiful open area close to many lovely parts of Britain. The staff were attentive but perhaps a little inexperienced. The rooms were good and the Hotel was well furnished with mature gardens.
negative comments Being an old building in the main part of the Hotel you can hear other guests. The modern annex is however much better

The hotel was much as we expected. We were disappointed that we couldn't book a table for dinner which meant that we had to go out (and had an awful meal incidentally). Other than that everything was good - we would have liked a room in the old part of the hotel but we only booked late. One minor point - a distinct lack of brown bread at breakfast! How unusual these days. If I were marking out of 10, I'd award a 7+ (99542666)

positive comments The hotel was clean, the staff very friendly and the overall impression was very good.
negative comments The bar was very smoky and as the hotel was full, getting a seat was a bit awkward.

Generally a very pleasant stay in nice surroundings. (99454671)

positive comments bar area, residents lounge and restaurant were all very pleasant
negative comments our bathroom needed updating, grubby grouting, there was dust on skirting boards etc. The sheets although clean had holes in them and the matress was of very poor quality resulting in bad backs!! The bar food was rather overpriced for both the quantity and quality.

A glorious part of the Cotswolds, the location is hard to beat. Nearby walks are bound to please weather permitting. The hotel itself and the staff were pleasant and helpful with jazz and croquet on the lawn both fond memories. Only gripe is the quality of food with regard to value for money. Did not feel that either our evening meal or breakfast (served in an atmospheric restaurant) were of a standard that met the surroundings (that is the hotel and countryside). (3305266134)

Building was even more attractive from the rear with pleasent garden area, but unfortunately this was spoilt by being positioned on a main road. Interior of the Hotel is well decorated and in keeping with the era of the building. Room was attractive but on the small side (door could not open fully without striking the bed). Windows in the Room opened onto attractive courtyard, but without AC it meant we had to leave them open overnight, unfortunatley, with patrons dinning or drinking in this area it added to the Bar room noise from below, and increased the overall night-time noise level (11pm cut off time for noise not seemingly observed by Hotel or vistors). My partners cooked breakfast seemed on the small side, but of good quality. Car parking was excellent, with more than adequate spaces. Some staff also appeared to be slightly inexperienced but pleasant nonetheless. (3305091920)

positive comments Appealing Room Decor
negative comments Room was over the Bar area, and as a consequence was very noisy late into the night. General soundproofing poor.

The hotel had lots of places to sit and relax including an outside seating area and croquet lawn. Close to town but far enough away to feel in the middle of nowhere. Hotel staff on reception added the extra touch by calling you by name in the morning and made you welcome. We didn't feel out of place in a lovely hotel with an 18 month old baby and felt very comfortable. Room was lovely although a little cramped with a travel cot in it, the hotel do provide cots at a cost of (3305021419)

positive comments The standard of the hotel was great, beautifully decorated and in keeping with the Cotswolds area - breakfast great too.
negative comments Not the hotels fault but it was incredibly hot and the sun was coming in our room mid afternoon onwards - nothing about the hotel was bad though.

The location was not very clear, might I suggest some AA signs or TI browns signs to help people in form the motorway. It is a well hidden jewel but well worth the visit,as I was staying only one night I dont believe I have enjoyed all the spoils of your hotel, but nevertheless my immediate findings were excellent and praise from my friends for booking The Bear was comforting as some hotels I have stayed at would find it hard to measure to your standards (3304838856)

positive comments The setting was gorgeous and taking a drink in the grounds whilst watching a game of croquet was very relaxing after the drive to you
negative comments My room number 2 was well hidden away and a bit on the small side

I would defimitely book here again and would eat in the restaurant or bars. Breakfast was good, although I don't think most people want toast and coffee brought together as soon as they sit down and before ordering the superb cooked breakfast. Bet I am not alone in liking warm toast with or after my main breakfast? It would have been useful for me to know there were so many stairs (we were on the second floor, fabulous views)but no lift, as I have arthritis in my hips and knees. I shall definitely go back but will request ground or first floor! Which means I would book online then phone to check request passed on as my request for dinner booking wasn't. (3304024891)

positive comments Lovely clean room, well appointed . Good views, fabulous food. Excellent shower. I had the best risotto I have tasted in UK.

The hotel is set on the middle of Rodborough Common, really fantastic countryside, maybe some people could feel cut off but the hotel has a lovely pub and an excellent restaurant so you don't really need a great deal more. It was about a 10 minute drive to Stoud. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bedroom was small, nicely decorated and comfortable bed but small, it was fine for one night but might feel a bit claustrophobic for longer, having said that there were obviously lots of rooms of all shapes and sizes. Fantastic views over the common. The only moan that I have is that on Saturday evening there was no hot water, not what you expect in this standard of hotel. Little could be done because apparently the boiler had gone off and it was clearly going to take a long time to heat up the amount of water needed. I would think everybody wanted to freshen up before dinner so this was disappointing. Apart from that we had a fantastic time. (1860011)

positive comments Excellent restaurant Great location Nice public areas Hotel exceptionally clean and welcoming
negative comments Room small No hot water on Saturday evening

Jan from Brentwood, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 05 February 2005

My husband and I are both healthy, if somewhat overweight, seventy year olds. Room 35 could have been difficult for us had we more luggage or not been able to manage the stairs. It might be a good plan to ask residents if they are able to manage three flights of stairs. The breakfast was poor with re-heated food not very well presented. An example was the haddock which was dry and served upside down, skin up. The speed with which it was served would indicate that it had been sitting. The scrambled egg had gone black. Service, however, good and friendly. We had been invited out both nights with relatives, but had we not, the breakfast did not invite us to try the restaurant for dinner. (1868253)

positive comments Nice room, bathroom and views. However, we did ask for a twin bedded room on booking.

Situated in a pleasant and quiet location the hotel has large on suite rooms with all basic requirements. Breakfasts and evening meals were of a good standard served by friendly and helpful staff. The only slight criticism would be the lack of recreational facilities/equipment in the hotel. (1555508)

Booking process very good, easy to use, informative, confirmation email promptly sent. The directions for the last mile from stroud had us touring the area for about 20 minutes till we 'discovered' the hotel. Food was very good, staff pleasant and efficient. There was plenty of car parking but the route from the car park to reception took every one through the out door function area, which had people attending functions each night. Residents had to share the bar with the guests at functions, intruding on them, and also making the bar very busy. We were never charged the same price for drinks throughout out stay. The room we had allocated may have been the smallest in the hotel but it was cramped with no stand up shower. the were limited hangers in wardrobe & no means of hanging clothes on the hangers we took. The drawers were too small ~6mm deep by ~30 cm width. The refreshments in the room did provide a choice of teas, and offered to provide fresh milk as requested, and included small bottles of water, but these weren't re-stocked during stay. However the hotel is in a pleasant location for the south end of the cotswolds, It has evidence of age and character, is generally clean and provides reasonable value for money. (1330347)

positive comments food very good, parking, reception and restaurant staff good
negative comments directions unclear from stroud. room very small, no stand up shower, poor clothes storage, bar prices inconsistant
