Hotel and surroundings.

Bar staff during the day event were not well organised, and often not present.
Anthony from Maidstone, GB (Mature couple) 04 October 2008
Very positive and would certainly return, maybe during the week when there are less groups?
(107126248)

Lovely old building, very well renovated. Staff friendly and efficient. Very good restaurant (but see below).

I had stayed at this hotel on a business trip and wanted to take my wife back for a weekend break. There had been a wedding during the day and there was a large group dining that evening so there was a restricted menu for dinner - food was good but perhaps not what we would have chosen. Breakfast next day was also not up to standard probably due to the group but the Saturday dinner & breakfast was back to a high standard.I realise that group business is important for hotels but it shouldn't impact on other guests.

Very nice relaxing stay.
(97226270)

Location, Overall impressive building and gardens all well maintained. Friendly helpful staff, especially late bar staff. Overall good feel about the place.

We bboked 2 rooms for 2 couples but our rooms were miles apart. Our weekend would have been better if the rooms had been closer. Only other bad point was that the plates for cooked breakfast were cold so the breakfast went cold very quickly and my wife didn't finish hers as a result of this.

The building and its grounds in general were superb. Also, the cleanliness of the accommodation was excellent. Our room was most certainly the icing on the cake as the faciliies were excellent and the decor was stunning. Staff were very welcoming and accommodating. Overall a very relaxing and peaceful break.
However, I do think that the evening dinner menu does need some work. Although it did not meet our own personal preferences it also did not cater for those who do not eat meat or fish, unless you are happy with simple roasted vegetables and vegetable ravioli. Also, although the choices for breakfast were excellent and the cold selection of foods were delicious, the hot items were disappointing as they were fairly cold and saturated in oil.
(97032805)

The building and its grounds in general.

The menu of the restaurant was very different to the sample on the website and standard of food at breakfast was poor.

Our only dissappointment was that we did not get a freshly cooked breakfast - it was pre-cooked in heated dished - rather like school dinners! I would have loved a poached egg!

Country House Hotel in nice location

Room was small, cramped and quite dirty.
Lynda from Waltham Cross, Herts, GB (Mature couple) 08 June 2007
Overall we had a very pleasant weekend break. Staff were very pleasant and helpful, especially in the restaurant which cannot go with less than a 9 out of 10. Only improvement that could be made is for someone to be more accessible for the bar area - where most guests spent up yo 20minutes waiting for service.
(99873108)

warm and friendly, pleasant decor

whilst room was not cramped it was not generous
Mark from Brighton, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 26 May 2007
Why was Worthington bitter only draught beer? A good ale would have been good. Steak was done well but sauce, mushrooms, chips barely average. Enjoyed the relaxed quiet atmosphere and the old building

Room was comfortable and large enough
Anonymous (Mature couple) 24 May 2007
The hotel is ideally situated near the M5 and a good location for exploring the Cotswolds. The old manor house and grounds are delightful, but rooms in the addition are not as attractive. The food is about average for a country house hotel, but service can be spotty if your stay happens to coincide with a large wedding party. Best to check before booking.
(99189831)

I chose the hotel because it was an old manor house with attractive grounds, located near a motorway, and the price seemed reasonable.

Our visit coincided with a large wedding party and food service was very slow. The breakfast offered the morning after the wedding was buffet style and not very good at all. The coffee was not freshly brewed and the eggs were unacceptable. Ordering from the menu the next morning was somewhat better. The bathroom fixtures, although quite new and smart looking, were not well designed or functional. The drain in the bath and the sink did not work properly. The windows were also badly designed.

Overall was a lovely stay, food and atmosphere was lovely and staff and service were excellent
(99539058)

The waiting staff were excellent

Nothing really to dislike, only comment is that the bathroom/shower room could possibly do with a little updating. But the hotel was lovely overall.
Anonymous (Mature couple) 25 April 2007
This looks like a country house hotel, but is in fact in a quite industrial suburban area, with nothing much around it to recomend a visit, and with no alternative restaurant close by we would not go again. The gardens were very pleasant however, and the staff feiendly and helpful.
(99617301)

The room, in the garden wing, was lovely, and the view was spectacular

The food at dinner was not good, too salty, strange taste combinations such as white chocolate and liquorice(!) and when we complained - having left a substantial amount of food uneaten- there was no response from the management. Breakfast was fine.

As knowing the area, the most important consideration was the location of the hotel, which suited us fine.
Upon arrival, checkin was prompt and courteous. The bar service was a little disappointing, as although I was a resident of the hotel, I was informed initially that the bar was closed. Fortunately, thanks to the intervention of the night porter this was rectified as it was only 23:15, not the early hours of the morning!
I requested a smoking room, and although I appreciate that requests cannot be guaranteed, it would have been nice to know prior to arrival that that whole hotel is designated as non-smoking. This was not clear from the booking process. This did have a slight impact on the stay, as although I can accept that rooms are non-smoking, I did not expect the whole premises to be non-smoking.

Although there were only a few people stopping at the hotel, we were made to feel very welcome. We arrived quite late and I would have liked to have been able to sit and and have a quiet drink before dinner they were obviously quite keen to get us into the dining room. Our room was nice and clean with a huge bed. We could have done with more towels as there was only a small one and a big one for the two of us. No hairdyer though which I don't think is accpetable these days, but overall I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

The picturesque setting,room,breakfast

We thought the evening meal was more of a work of art than a meal.Very formal and although some people may like this sort of thing we prefer some food on the plates. We'd had a full day at Cheltenham races, out in the open,we were looking forward to a good evening meal.We ended up going out to the local chip shop after paying for the evening meal in the hotel.Everything else was fine.We will return but won't be dining in the evening

Enjoyable stay - made all the better by being upgraded to the Honeymoon suite. The finish in the bathroom could have been better. But overall very nice!
(99437259)

We were upgraded to the honeymoon suite and the room was very big and full of character and charm

There was not enough hot water to fill the bath and in the bathroom there were many issues - loose tiles, ill fitting fitments - on the surface it looked good but scratch the surface and it appears to have been done 'on the cheap'

The atmosphere made my wife and i very relaxed. The bedroom was lovely and inviting.

Anonymous (Young couple) 18 October 2006
Beautiful building and grounds with good facilities in the hotel and helpful, polite staff. Didn't eat in the restaurant, but the breakfast menu was extensive and the food adequate. The room was a slight let down in comparison to the rest of the hotel, with an uncomfortable bed and dated bathroom, but general size and decor was good.
The hotel was clean and well looked after and I would probably stay here again, but would try a different hotel in the area first. It wouldn't be my first choice and I certainly wouldn't stay here for a romantic weekend away due to the let down of the room itself.
(99877597)

The building and setting were really attractive. Breakfast was ok, however on the 3 mornings we stayed there were items not available from the menu, no delivery was the reason given. Food at dinner was good but overpriced. The Garden Room was very small for 2 people, there was no table/chairs in the room and the television was too big, it took up too much valuable space. The fittings looked cheap and the carpet was marked and requied vacuuming. The bathroom was too small and there was nowhere to leave toiletries. The staff were pleasant.

The view from the window

The room was a Garden Room it was very small and looked shabby. The bathroom was also very small.

Stonehouse Hotel is set in lovely grounds and the entrance and lounge area are charming - real sense of history and presence. The staff are courteous and attentive. The food is excellent and the breakfast was very good. Staying in the modern annex of the hotel was a disappointment - the rooms need attention and the bathroom in particular was below par for a 3 star hotel.
(3305054813)

The hotel setting and grounds are lovely. The staff very attentive and courteous. Food very good.

We stayed in the modern annex - not as impressive as the rest of the hotel - smelt musty and the shower was hopeless - scalding or freezing
