Our break was made so special through staying at this hotel. The food was divine. The spa facilities more than adequate. The grounds were a joy to explore. Every aspect of the hotel was more than we could have wished for.

The service was outstanding, every member of staff we encountered was polite and nothing was too much trouble. Accomodation was exquisite.

There were no bad points

No actual bar. No tea and coffee facilities in room (this was available on request but didn't know until after our stay when looking at the hotel's website)

VERY DISAPOINTING
(107725219)

I FELT VERY DISAPOINTED WITH THE HOTEL WE STAYED OVERNIGHT FOR OUR WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, ON ARRIVAL WE WERE TAKEN TO OUR ROOM WHICH WAS IN THE COURTYARD AND I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO STAY IN THE HOUSE ITSELF THE BATHROOM WAS REALLY SMALL AND IN NEED OF DECORATION. OUR ROOM HAD NO TEA AND COFFEE MAKING FACILITIES AND I HAD TO ASK FOR SOME TO ME THIS IS NOT FOUR STAR STANDARD , WE WERE GIVEN A TRAY WITH A JAR OF COFFEE NO WHAT I WOULD CALL DECENT COFFEE WHICH YOU LOOK FORWARD TO AS PART OF YOUR TREAT, WE DID NOT HAVE BREAKFAST AS WE HAD BOOKED ROOM ONLY AND I THOUGHT THE BREAKFAST CHARGE WAS VERY EXPENSIVE. I DONT THINK WE WILL BE STAYING WIYH YOU AGAIN, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOU LOOKING AT MY COMPLAINT

The warmth and efficiency of the welcome invariably sets the atmosmosphere of any short break. The staff at Middlethorpe, without exception, were excellent. The relaxed ambience of the hotel interior and the peaceful setting made our family reunion memorable. We were especially pleased to discover how short a taxi drive took us to the centre of York.

The Courtyard setting especially appealed to our daughters. They fancied putting in a bid!

The only things we were disappointed about was that we were unable to book a treatment in the Spa as it is booked up weeks ahead. If we had been advised of this at time of booking we could of booked in advance.
We would have preferred to eat in the Resturant in the evening but the menu did not have anything that really appealled and it was expensive to be eating something that you were not really enjoying.

very comfortable beds and overall cleanliness

an excellent place to go to be looked after, staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, however you do pay for this as it is quite expensive. Being the first time i have stayed at this kind of place i wasnot sure what to expect. i loved the stay but would like a bit more freedom re making a drink etc as there were no facilities in the room although room service is offered
(97306369)

nice size rooms and the complementary soap/showergel etc was excellent

it was up a flight of stairs and the window overlooked a wall
PAUL from PUDSEY, GB (Young couple) 24 July 2007
The hotel was perfect for our romantic stay away from noisy children and busy lives. We loved the fourposter bedroom, although a large bath or jacuzzi in the room would have been wonderfull, although we realise their is a spa we werent sure what was included in the price of the room and to be honest we were so busy enjoying the peace to think about checking things out more! Two baileys cost us

Not much to add to above. The standard was above what we expected from the web site especially the food, service and lovely garden.
(3304938475)

All the staff were friendly and helpful, the service was immaculate. We were surprised by how good the food was; we were not expecting such a fine restaurant from what we had read about the hotel. The garden and grounds were lovely and my wife enjoyed walking the dogs there while I attended a meeting. We had read that dogs were not welcome but during the day the staff seemed very relaxed about the dogs being in the grounds and chasing rabbits. All in all I am not sure my wife and I have ever had such a pleasant stay in a British hotel.

The only criticism that I can come up with is the noise of traffic. The hotel seems to be near a fairly busy ring road.
Clement from Nottingham, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 07 June 2006
The price was expensive for the room. We paid
(3304758645)

The setting was superb and the room good with attentive staff. The gardens and grounds were attractive and pleasant to walk in.

The decor was dated (80s)and it could have done with a revamp.
Carol from Tunstall, Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom;GB (Other) 28 May 2006
As you drive up to the Hall the first impresssion is of a grand house suggestive of luxury and service - and that was what was delivered. Staff were highly professional but very friendly and helpful; the decor and furniture throughout the Hall was in keeping with the period of the building and its history; the attention to detail showed thought and consideration for guests (the shortbread in the room was brilliant!; the food was excellent - one of the best continental breakfasts experienced. The room in the Courtyard was spacious, clean and well appointed. The bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in and the shower was the sort you just dont want to get out off in the morning! The cottage style of the Courtyard was in keeping with its position and view over the beautiful garden - I recommend a visit in Spring to really enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Hall's location and the expertly tended grounds and gardens. If you are looking for a restful, pampered break or somewhere to stay on business I would most definately recommend Middlethorpe - it may not be the cheapest hotel in York but it gets my vote for the best value for money every time. Cant wait to go back!
(3304734273)

Everything - from the location of the Hall, the food, the grandeur of the building, the friendliness of the staff and the beautiful gardens in full bloom in May.

Nothing - the only negative was that the stay wasn't for longer.

Middlethorpe is an expensive place to stay but the extra cost is worth it. The sheer magnificence of the Hotel sets the stay off on the right footing. Once within you are greeted by incredibly professional and very warm/friendly staff. The rooms (courtyard) are excellent. They are spacious, incredibly clean and the beds are superb. The spa fcilities are outstanding. A great swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi etc. The gym is a tad basic. The restaurant is incredible. The food being as good as I have ever tasted. York city centre is only a short drive away too. Initially you think cripes it better be worth what I am paying, but you come away thinking if nly I could have stayed longer because it really is such a wonderful place to stay.

The accomodation was so luxurious and the historical nature of the accomodation simply added to the enjoyment. Spacious, clean rooms, very good beds.

The spa was quite , well maintained and in excellent order. The staff were exceptional and the room service fantastic. The whole experience was luxurious and would definatly go again and again and again. the only slightly down side was the limited menu in the restaurant..it was quail beef or pigeon and various fish dishes
(3304200135)

we got upgraded to a cottage suite, free ! it was total luxury, our own living room, dining room,tv in every rrom, dvd, kitchen and our own courtyard with fish pond. Huge kingsize bed, crabtree and evelyn bath products and luxury

restaurant menu was too short, either game or fish

historic buildings and old style courtesy of service, attention to detail such as turning the beds down in evening

breakfast choice looked limited when arriving after 9.30am for breakfast.

Worth staying for the beautiful grounds. Would perhaps not recommend the restaurant, though I'd give it a second chance before deciding completely.
(2645125)

The grounds are beautiful and the croquet was fun. Staff are very attentive. Room was nice, but not what I would call exceptional. Perhaps the rooms in the main house are more luxurious or unique.

We were put in a sitting room before dinner for a drink and were then accosted by a wedding party claiming that the room was booked for their use only. The hotel should have been on top of arrangements. The dinner was perfectly competent, but for the price I expected something a bit more special and imaginative.
Sarah from Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom;GB (Young couple) 07 September 2005
Not cheap but worth it if you're looking for somewhere to be pampered. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Very handy location for accessing the city centre and the race course although it is hard to drag yourself away from the hotel!

Beautiful hotel in a wonderful tranquil setting. We had our evening meal at the hotel on our first night and the food served was superb - especially the desert ! Went into York for a meal on the 2nd night and regretted not having stayed at the hotel to eat again !
Excellent place to relax and be pampered and treated very, very well. Would definitely go back again. Rates very highly in terms of friendly, welcoming but luxurious place to stay for both of us (and we're both well travelled).
(2541597)

Lovely airy room with good facilities; excellent Spa facilities; very friendly staff and we enjoyed the feeling of being welcome at the hotel.

Speed of room service - took quite a while for two sandwiches and a pot of tea.
Anonymous (Young couple) 01 September 2005
The building and surroundings were absolutely beautiful, really well looked after and maintained. The staff were incredibly courteous and friendly and it was a stones throw from the York centre - we will definately be recommending Middlethrope Hall to our friends, we loved it! If you're after a relaxing weekend away from it all this is the place to go.

Rooom was a little cramped for anyone working away, leaving little room for laptop and papers. Otherwise this was comfortable.
I ordered a tray of tea after dinner in my room. This did not arrive.
My breakfast tray had no toast on it.
I had an excellent meal in your restaurant.

John from Pontefract, United Kingdom;GB (Mature couple) 10 August 2005
This was a very special occasion, which due to circumstances was arranged at the last minute. The whole process from the initial booking through to checking out was completed with ease. The web site contained ample information to make a well-informed choice. The ease of booking and immediate response to availability enabled other matters to be considered, without the worry of knowing whether or not the facilities were available. Staff at the Hotel were immaculate and professional throughout. Their attention to detail and hospitable demeanour made our stay a pleasure. Nothing was too much and requests for service or advice were dealt with promptly. Thank you and we will certainly be returning in the future and have recently recommended the Hotel to relatives and friends.
(2604673)

The accommodation had all the elegance of a country manner coupled with the individuality of a small cottage in idyllic settings.

Restaurant prices are a touch expensive as far as set menus go. My partner and I dined in York at an exclusive restaurant for 2/3 the price. This was a shame as the settings and ambience within the Hall would have been nice.

We very much enjoyed our stay. The hotel was beautiful, the staff were very attentive and professional and we were lucky enough to have almost exclusive use of the leisure facilities - we used the gym, sauna, pool and beauty rooms and enjoyed a walk of the grounds.
The opportunity to use the lounge and library was welcome - these were interesting and pleasant spaces in which to spend time.
I have already recommended this hotel to friends and colleagues and would certainly return, although would probably eat out elsewhere in the evening. While the food was very good, it was not cheap. Great for a special occasion.
GENERAL BOOKING ISSUE: Can you please ensure that the title 'MS' is provided as an option when booking?
(2459223)

The room was very pleasant and comfortable, set in beautiful surroundings.

We can't think of any. The only thing that wasn't excellent is beyond the control of the hotel: the nearby road noise was a little intrusive while we were sitting out on the terrace (on a beautiful summer's evening). While the food was very good, it didn't represent excellent value for money. The breakfast did not compare favourably with the quality of the evening meal, although the service was very good.
Keith from Glasgow, United Kingdom;GB (Solo business traveller) 27 June 2005
Overall, very good, and a welcome change from 'regulation' cell block hotels: will particularly appeal to overseas visitors looking for a taster of old England.
(2439828)

Individuality

Reception staff could be more informative about spa facilities. Requiring formal dress in restaurant is outdated.
