The bus for Florence airport also leaves from just outside the station.

  • Medici Chapels (11.79 km) - The Medici Chapels are the jewel of San Lorenzo church in Florence. Michelangelo's New Sacristy (Nuova Sagrestia) is the highlight, containing the elaborately sculpted tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici, one of the most important families of the Italian Renaissance.

  • Stibbert Museum (10.56 km) - If you are a fan of military memorabilia, then Florence's Stibbert Museum is the place for you. A tour guide takes you around the extensive collection of paintings, armoury, porcelain and costumes. The main attraction is the Sala della Cavalcata, which is a life-size reproduction of a confrontation between European and Islamic soldiers. You can also visit the Gardens, laid out in a typical English style.

  • Santa Maria Novella (11.48 km) - Florence's Santa Maria Novella was the earliest of the great Florentine churches to be built. The stunning Renaissance façade of the former Dominican headquarters is matched by the beautiful interior, which houses works by Renaissance masters such as Brunelleschi, Ghirlandaio and Lippi. Also worthy of note is the stunning Cappella Strozzi, which takes its inspiration from Dante's Inferno. Next to Santa Maria Novella is the church museum, worth a look for the vivid frescoes in the cloisters and trhe Spanish Chapel. Take time to relax in the piazza in front of the church, a favourite picnic spot for the Florentines.

  • Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (11.04 km) - The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino theatre in Florence is home to the world-class musical festival of the same name, held during May. The theatre also has a packed opera, ballet and concert programme during the rest of the year. Included on the 2005 programme are La Traviata, Turandot, Tosca and Don Giovanni.

  • Bussotti Wine Shop (11.67 km) - The Bussotti Wine Shop in Florence is one of the oldest in Italy. Although it houses wines from all Italian regions, Tuscan wines are the main focus, including the classics: Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti and Nobile di Montepulciano. • Florence by Bike (11.47 km) - To get back to nature in the Tuscan countryside stop off at Florence By Bike. You can either hire a bike or scooter and go off on your own on one of the suggested itineraries, or take the challenging, but extremely rewarding Chianti Bike Tour. Either way, you will see parts of Florence that most visitors do not get to see and sample some of the local wine in its natural environment.

The villa, once part of an agricultural estate, was also a former residence of the Brunelleschi and Savoy families and has fabulous gardens that you can wander through. Just down the road is Villa di Castello, former home of Botticelli's Primavera and Birth of Venus (now in the Uffizi), which also has lovely gardens. The third villa is Villa di Careggi, where Lorenzo the Magnificent's Platonic scholars used to meet.
