Both cities were buried following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and the modern town of Ercolano is actually built over 15 metres above the ancient city. Highlights include the Thermae baths, the House of the Carbonised Furniture and the Villa of the Papyri, home of some charred Roman scrolls.
