Local Attractions near Best Western Vivahotel Laurus Al Duomo

  • Duomo - Cathedral of Florence (0.31 km) -

  • Medici Chapels (0.24 km) - The Medici Chapels are the jewel of San Lorenzo church in Florence. Michelangelo's New Sacristy (Nuova Sagrestia) is the highlight, containing the elaborately sculpted tombs of Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici, one of the most important families of the Italian Renaissance.

  • Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (0.44 km) - The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is an excellent museum detailing the construction of Florence Cathedral. Among the Renaissance masterpieces exhibited are a Pieta' by Michelangelo, choir-lofts by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, an altar sculpted by Verrocchio and Michelozzo and a model of Brunelleschi's dome.

  • Orsanmichele (0.37 km) - Orsanmichele is one of the most important churches in Florence. Originally built as a grain store, it now houses important Renaissance works by Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio. You can also still visit the original grain store above Orsanmichele.

  • Bargello Museum (0.51 km) - Florence's Bargello Museum houses the largest collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture in Italy. Housed in the impressive Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the museum has rooms dedicated to Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Giovanni and Andrea della Robbia.

  • Santa Maria Novella (0.34 km) - Florence's Santa Maria Novella was the earliest of the great Florentine churches to be built. The stunning Renaissance façade of the former Dominican headquarters is matched by the beautiful interior, which houses works by Renaissance masters such as Brunelleschi, Ghirlandaio and Lippi. Also worthy of note is the stunning Cappella Strozzi, which takes its inspiration from Dante's Inferno. Next to Santa Maria Novella is the church museum, worth a look for the vivid frescoes in the cloisters and trhe Spanish Chapel. Take time to relax in the piazza in front of the church, a favourite picnic spot for the Florentines.

  • Gozzoli's frescoes (0.31 km) - Gozzoli's stunning frescoes in the Medici-Riccardi palace are among the most beautiful Renaissance works in Florence. Lining three walls of the Chapel of the Magi, the frescoes tell the Nativity story in vivid detail, with each wall dedicated to one of the Magi. In true Renaissance fashion, members of the Medici family (including Lorenzo the Magnificent) can also be seen among the procession.

  • Palazzo Vecchio (0.52 km) - Florence's Palazzo Vecchio is one of the symbols of the city. Originally home to the Florentine republican government, the ruling Medici then took over the palazzo for a few years and the lavish décor you can now see is largely due to their court artist Giorgio Vasari. Most rooms are elaborately frescoed by Vasari and Ghirlandaio and the Map Room (once Machiavelli's office) is lined by Renaissance paintings of all known world geography at the time. You might even encounter 'Vasari' himself who will explain his work. It is also worth booking a guided tour of the secret passageways the Medici family had built.

  • Palazzo Corsini (0.46 km) - Walking through Palazzo Corsini you are immersed in the splendour of Florentine Renaissance life. Former home of the wealthy Corsini family, the use of perspective in the elaborate frescoes is astounding. The highlight of the palazzo is the Grotta, a lavish cave-like room surrounded on all sides by sculptures and paintings.

  • Scoppio del Carro - Explosion of the Cart (0.28 km) - The Scoppio del Carro (or Explosion of the Cart) takes place each year in the Piazza del Duomo. This is a historical event where a dove-shaped rocket called the 'Colombina' flies out of the famous Duomo and sets fires to a huge wodden cart in the square. It's a pagan ritual and is meant to secure good luck for the city and a good harvest - and now not only with harvests but in the everyday life and business of its citizens.
