Local Attractions near Hotel Pierre Milano

  • Santa Maria delle Grazie (0.92 km) -

  • Cadorna Station (1.13 km) - Milan's Cadorna Station (Stazione Nord-Cadorna) is located just to the west of the city centre. The Milan Malpensa Express runs out of here and the station also serves various other towns in northern Lombardy.

  • Milan Cathedral (1.2 km) - The sheer immensity of Milan's impressive Gothic Cathedral (Duomo) is due to the fact that it took over 400 years to complete. Unfortunately the façade is currently covered for restoration purposes, but you can still get a feel of the architecture from both inside and outside the cathedral. A nail from Christ's cross is the most important holy relic and St Augustine, one of the fathers of Christianity, was baptized in the 4th century baptistery. Undeniably one of the highlights is a trip onto the cathedral's roof, offering a stunning view of the city and, on a clear day, even the Alps.

  • Castello Sforzesco (1.21 km) - Located in the grounds of Parco Sempione, the stately Castello Sforzesco was the home of the important Renaissance court presided over by the Sforza family, the 15th century rulers of Milan. Now it is largely a shell, but it does house some of Milan's most important museums (Egyptian Museum, Prehistoric Museum and Ancient Art Museum) and counts Michelangelo's unfinished Pieta' among the exhibits. Behind the castle, there is also an arena and triumphal arch built by Napoleon before losing Milan to the Austrians.

  • Da Vinci's Last Supper (0.92 km) - Leonardo da Vinci's 'Last Supper' (Cenacolo) is understandably one of the most popular visitor attractions in Milan and therefore booking is imperative. Painted using oil on the refectory wall of the charming Santa Maria delle Grazie church, it narrowly avoided being destroyed by a bomb in World War Two and has just recently been re-opened following restoration work.

  • Navigli canal district (0.81 km) - The Navigli district in Milan is a popular meeting spot for the Milanese. Arty shops, bars and restaurants line the two canals (navigli) that radiate from Piazzale 24 Maggio, the largest piazza in Milan. Here is a good place to experience the Milanese tradition of the aperitivo. With every drink bought during happy hour you can sample a variety of Italian specialities and there is usually enough food to ensure that you will not need to eat anything else that night!

  • Pinacoteca Ambrosiana (0.76 km) - The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, both a library and an art museum, was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in the 17th century. The collection is made up of both Italian and Flemish artists, including the supposed first Italian still life by Caravaggio. Also displayed is a lock of Lucrezia Borgia's hair, declared by Byron to be the most beautiful he had ever seen.

  • Portinari Chapel (0.66 km) - The Portinari Chapel is the jewel in the crown of the Church of Sant'Eustorgio in the Ticinese district of Milan. Commissioned by Medici banker Pigello Portinari to house the remains of St Peter the Martyr, the beautiful chapel contains work by Michelozzo and Vincenzo Foppa. It is also worth having a look inside Sant'Eustorgio, where some of the bones of the Magi are kept.

  • Columns of San Lorenzo (0.32 km) - The modern day location of the Milanese Columns of San Lorenzo, (in front of the Church of San Lorenzo), is not actually where they were originally erected. The 2nd century AD Roman columns were recovered from their original site in the 4th century and relocated in Milan's popular Ticinese district. At night, the immediate vicinity of the Columns of San Lorenzo is brimming with young people, who congregate here before going on to one of the districts' numerous bars and restaurants.

  • Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology (0.44 km) - The excellent Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology dispels the myth that da Vinci was just an artist. The museum contains over 100 reconstructions of his technological designs, including a rather ambitious rudimentary flying machine. This large museum also houses 27 other sections dedicated to themes ranging from IT to astronomy to musical instruments. The largest section contains the transport exhibits and includes trains, aeroplanes and even a cruise ship! .
