Local Attractions near Country House Pro Vobis

  • Perugia - San Egidio Airport (6.43 km) - (PEG) Airport of Perugia, Perugia.

  • Università Italiana per Stranieri (16.86 km) - Perugia’s Università Italiana per Stranieri run a series of Italian language courses for foreigners throughout the year. There are various levels of language course, depending on your previous knowledge, and they also offer a month long intensive course for students about to undertake an Erasmus exchange program in Italy. Also on offer are refresher courses for teachers of Italian abroad and cultural courses.

  • Piazza IV Novembre (16.84 km) - The large Piazza IV Novembre is located right in the centre of the beautiful walled city of Perugia. The piazza is home to Perugia Cathedral, a building with a rather unusual façade that distinguishes it from any other Renaissance church in Italy. Also facing the piazza is the extraordinary architecture of the Palazzo dei Priori, which boasts some fine frescoes in the Sala dei Notai and the National Gallery of Umbria on the upper floor. Next to the Priori are the beautiful medieval Collegio della Mercanzia and Collegio di Cambio. Once the seats of the medieval merchant guild and money exchange, they are both elaborately decorated and well worth a look. Also worthy of note is Pisano’s intriguing Fontana Maggiore that sits in the middle of the piazza.

  • National Gallery of Umbria (16.87 km) - The large National Gallery of Umbria in Palazzo Priori houses a number of works of art by Perugia’s most famous son Pietro Vanucci, called Perugino. Among the many other paintings exhibited, mainly of a religious nature, are works by Raphael, Gozzoli, Piero della Francesca and Taddeo di Bartolo. There are also some excellent sculptures by Pisano and a section dedicated to 15th century Umbrian artists.

  • Perugia Archeological Museum (16.56 km) - Perugia Archeological Museum is housed in the beautiful cloisters of San Domenico church. Perugia was an important Etruscan town, a fact reflected by the wealth of Etruscan artefacts in the museum. The reconstruction of the Cai Catu Etruscan tomb, whose headstones demonstrate the passage from the Etruscan language to Latin, is particularly interesting. The museum also houses the Cippo Perugino, a stone with brightly coloured Etruscan inscriptions, and a variety of urns dating back to the 3rd century BC.

  • Città della Domenica (20.73 km) - Perugia's Città della Domenica is a zoo combined with a children's playground. After having a look at the zebras, wallabies, lions, camels, monkeys and the reptile house, parents can relax in one of the restaurants while children play in the ball pool and native Indian village or go on the mini train and slides. You can also take a walk through the beautiful greenery of Monte Pulito, where Città della Domenica is located.

  • Perugia football stadium (19.22 km) - The Stadio Renato Curi is home to Italian Serie B football team Perugia. Matches are played almost every other weekend during the football season and the 28,500 capacity means that tickets are fairly easy to buy (depending on the opponent).

  • Gubbio Roman Amphitheatre (28.44 km) - Gubbio’s Roman Amphitheatre was one of the largest of its time (1st century AD) and is still in use today. The amphitheatre used to be able to house 10,000 spectators, but the need for stone in the Middle Ages has meant that now only part of the bottom ring and a small section of the lower ring of arches remains. You can only visit the amphitheatre in the mornings, but if you are in Gubbio in July or August you may be fortunate enough to get tickets for one of the outdoor performances of classical plays held in the theatre.

  • Basilica of Saint Francis (2.66 km) - The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is one of the most famous churches in Italy. Comprised of two churches the basilica is World Heritage-listed for its outstanding architectural and artistic value. The basilica was built on the spot where Saint Francis, Assisi’s most famous son, was born and his body is now housed in the crypt, making this an important pilgrimage site. The Lower Church is almost entirely covered in frescoes by Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti amongst others. However, the most spectacular frescoes are those in the Upper Church by Giotto detailing the life of the saint. Also worth a look are the medieval cloisters and the Treasury.

  • Basilica di Santa Chiara (3.64 km) - The Basilica of Santa Chiara is the burial place of Saint Clare, founder of the female wing of the Franciscan movement (Poor Clares). You can see her mummified body inside the church, making this an important pilgrimage site, and the basilica also houses a crucifix that was supposed to have spoken to Saint Francis.
