  • Venice Christmas Market (0.11 km) - A Christmas village is created in Venice's Santo Stefano Square during the Christmas markets. More than 30 Alpine-style wooden houses are specially constructed in the square serving up regional specialities and hosting live musical entertainment. Gifts on offer include typical hand-made Venetian glass, lace, paper, soaps and perfumes, toys and leathergoods....

  • Accademia Art Gallery (0.08 km) - Venice's Accademia Art Gallery is the most important collection of Venetian art in the world. Among the works dating from the early Renaissance to the 18th century are masterpieces by Tintoretto, Carpaccio and Bellini. In front of the museum is the Accademia bridge, one of only three over the Grand Canal and unique for its wooden structure.

  • La Fenice theatre (0.4 km) - La Fenice in Venice is one of Italy's most famous opera houses. Recently restored following a devastating fire, the façade of the theatre is unimpressive, but the interior is spectacular. If you are unable to get tickets for a performance, you can still take a guided tour of the theatre. Also if you take a wander round to the back of La Fenice, you might see the unusual sight of a barge bringing some of the stage scenery into the theatre.

  • Scuola Grande di San Rocco (0.56 km) - The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is famous for housing over 50 works by Tintoretto, including his masterpiece, the Crucifixion. San Rocco is the finest of all the Venetian scuole (schools), whose main aim was to provide help to their wealthy members, but the heavy subscriptions paid allowed them to sponsor numerous works of art.

  • Palazzo Grassi (0.22 km) - The beautiful waterfront Palazzo Grassi is home to some of Venice's most prestigious exhibitions. A Dalì exhibition has just closed and previous exhibitions include Picasso 1917-1924, the Etruscans, Leonardo and Venice and Futurism. Check the official website for the current programme.

  • Santa Maria della Salute (0.5 km) - Santa Maria della Salute is the most recognisable church in Venice after Saint Mark's. Located on the south bank of the Grand Canal, the huge gleaming white church was built in recognition of Venice being spared from the 17th century plague. Even now, annually on 21 November, Venetians construct a pontoon bridge across the Grand Canal from the Salute to the San Marco district, which they then bravely proceed to walk across.

  • Guggenheim Museum, Venice (0.26 km) - Venice's Guggenheim museum is the premier 20th century art collection in Italy. Lining the walls of Peggy Guggenheim's former residence on the bank of the Grand Canal are works by Futurist, Cubist and Abstract Expressionist artists, including paintings by Picasso, Klee and Dalì amongst others. The museum also often houses temporary exhibitions.

  • Venice Carnival (0.52 km) - During the Venice Carnival the locals and tourists parade in elaborate costumes and masks along Venice's narrow alleys and canals. Saint Mark's Square comes alive during the day and at night with parades and music. The packed Carnival programme also includes theatre and masked balls in other parts of Venice.
