Località Pancole 10/B, San Gimignano , 53037

Sun-Thu: €100 | Fri-Sat: €100

(for a double room)

Hotel Le Renaie is located at the top of Pancole, small village 5 km from San Gimignano. The hotel was completely refurbished in 2006 and offers you all modern comforts.

Pancole was once the seat of the Carolingian counts. Today it is famous for being home to a 17th-century sanctuary. Here you can admire the precious Madonna di Pancole, painted in the 15th century by Pier Francesco Fiorentino.

Hotel Le Renaie was established in the 1970s, adding just a few rooms to the already famous Leonetto restaurant. Mr. Leonetto Sabatini, the owner at the time, was one of the first entrepreneurs to invest in countryside tourism in Italy.

Hotel Le Renaie has a restaurant serving typical Tuscan cuisine.

Local Attractions near Hotel Le Renaie

  • Panzanello wine producers (23.14 km) - The Panzanello wine producers are located right in the heart of the Chianti wine-growing region. The four main wines they produce are the Chianti Classico, the Chianti Classico Riserva, Manuzio (red) and Tregaio (white) and they also produce an excellent Extra Virgin Olive Oil. You can sample all their products at the vineyard farmhouse and even book a tour of the wine cellar where the classic wines are still maturing.

  • San Domenico (29.86 km) - The huge red-brick basilica of San Domenico, set on a small hill in Siena, can be seen for miles around. As the former headquarters of the Dominican movement in Siena, the history of the church is closely related to Saint Catherine of Siena, one of its most famous adherents. Inside, the church is airy and contains frescoes by Lippo Memmi and Andrea Vanni. However, pride of place goes to the chapel of Saint Catherine (patron saint of Italy) which contains her head and finger on full view.

  • Saint Catherine's House (29.86 km) - Saint Catherine’s house was turned into a shrine following her canonisation. This was the house where Catherine confined herself in order to avoid entering a convent (the only option for an unmarried girl in Medieval and Renaissance Italy). Although the original house has been substantially modified (e.g. the kitchen is now an oratory), you can still visit the ‘cell’ where Catherine confined herself and which now contains some beautiful frescoes. In front of the house you may be fortunate enough to see some of the youths from the Goose contrada of Siena practising the medieval art of flag-throwing.

  • Enoteca Italiana wine collection (29.51 km) - The Enoteca Italiana, located in Siena’s Fortezza Medicea, is a huge wine store in which you can sample and buy all the best varieties from every Italian region. Over 1000 wines are stocked, all chosen for their superior quality, and an experienced sommelier will help you to choose the perfect wine for each occasion. In the summer you can sample the wines and local specialities whilst sitting under the pergolas in the grounds of the Fortezza and there is also the possibility of booking a wine tour to one of the local vineyards. The Enoteca also hosts a variety of cultural events promoting a particular wine or region.

  • Siena football stadium (29.71 km) - Siena's Stadio Artemio Franchi is home to Italian Serie A football team Siena. Matches are played at the 13,000 seater stadium almost every other weekend during the football season, but the small capacity means that you will need to get tickets in advance.

  • Collegiata (1.74 km) - The Cathedral of San Gimignano (called the Collegiata) can boast the most elaborate frescoes of any church in Tuscany. The frescoes detailing Biblical stories beginning with the Flood right through until the Last Judgement were painted by important artists such as Gozzoli and Taddeo di Bartolo. The Chapel of Saint Fina also houses a stunning fresco cycle by Ghirlandaio portraying the life of the saint. The piazza in front of the Collegiata is the favoured spot to start a walking tour of the beautiful medieval town of San Gimignano.

  • Civic Museum, San Gimignano (1.74 km) - The Palazzo del Popolo is the home of the excellent San Gimignano Civic Museum housing a wealth of Sienese and Tuscan art. Artists featured include Lippi, Taddeo di Bartolo and Pinturicchio and the museum also contains Lippo Memmi’s masterpiece Maestà. Most of the rooms in the palazzo are frescoed and the most notable are the hunting scenes in the Sala di Dante. Next to the Palazzo del Popolo is the Torre Grossa, the only one of San Gimignano’s remaining 14 towers (there were over 70) that you can climb and from where you have an excellent view over the town and the Tuscan countryside.
