Local Attractions near Hotel Tornabuoni Beacci

  • Duomo - Cathedral of Florence (0.5 km) -

  • Uffizi Galleries (0.41 km) - The sublime Uffizi Galleries house Italy's finest and largest art collection and are justifiably the prime tourist stop in Florence. Located on the banks of the Arno river, the museum boasts so many masterpieces that you could be forgiven for no longer being astounded by their craftsmanship by the time you reach the end. Artists featured range from Raphael to Rubens, Leonardo to Lippi and Michelangelo to Memling. Among the most well-known pieces are Botticelli's Primavera and The Birth of Venus, Michelangelo's Holy Family and Rembrandt's Self Portrait as an Old Man.

  • Ponte Vecchio (0.32 km) - Florence's Ponte Vecchio bridge was once home to some of its citizens. These days the bridge that links the Uffizi galleries to Palazzo Pitti only houses jewellery shops. Artisans also line the narrow walkways and from the centre of the bridge you get a nice view of the Arno river.

  • Orsanmichele (0.3 km) - Orsanmichele is one of the most important churches in Florence. Originally built as a grain store, it now houses important Renaissance works by Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio. You can also still visit the original grain store above Orsanmichele.

  • Bargello Museum (0.53 km) - Florence's Bargello Museum houses the largest collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture in Italy. Housed in the impressive Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the museum has rooms dedicated to Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Giovanni and Andrea della Robbia.

  • Piazza della Signoria (0.36 km) - The Piazza della Signoria is the most enchanting square in Florence and is always buzzing with people. Beautiful Palazzo Vecchio (or Palazzo della Signoria), with its distinctive bell-tower, is the most recognisable building lining the square. Next door is the Loggia of the Lanzi, which houses some important Renaissance sculpture. The piazza is also renowned for its replica of Michelangelo's David (the original is kept at the Accademia gallery).

  • Palazzo Vecchio (0.36 km) - Florence's Palazzo Vecchio is one of the symbols of the city. Originally home to the Florentine republican government, the ruling Medici then took over the palazzo for a few years and the lavish décor you can now see is largely due to their court artist Giorgio Vasari. Most rooms are elaborately frescoed by Vasari and Ghirlandaio and the Map Room (once Machiavelli's office) is lined by Renaissance paintings of all known world geography at the time. You might even encounter 'Vasari' himself who will explain his work. It is also worth booking a guided tour of the secret passageways the Medici family had built.

  • Palazzo Corsini (0.21 km) - Walking through Palazzo Corsini you are immersed in the splendour of Florentine Renaissance life. Former home of the wealthy Corsini family, the use of perspective in the elaborate frescoes is astounding. The highlight of the palazzo is the Grotta, a lavish cave-like room surrounded on all sides by sculptures and paintings.

  • Museum of the History of Science, Florence (0.46 km) - Florence's interesting Museum of the History of Science is an important collection of historical scientific equipment. Among the exhibits collected by the Florentine Medici and Lorraine families are original telescopes, compasses and lenses used by Galileo. There are also some early electromagnetic and surgical instruments.

  • Scoppio del Carro - Explosion of the Cart (0.43 km) - The Scoppio del Carro (or Explosion of the Cart) takes place each year in the Piazza del Duomo. This is a historical event where a dove-shaped rocket called the 'Colombina' flies out of the famous Duomo and sets fires to a huge wodden cart in the square. It's a pagan ritual and is meant to secure good luck for the city and a good harvest - and now not only with harvests but in the everyday life and business of its citizens.
