Local Attractions near Locanda Carmel

  • Rome Christmas Market (1.5 km) - One of Rome's famous squares, Piazza Navone, plays host to the city's traditional Christmas markets. Amidst nativity scenes and Christmas decorations, stalls sell local festive crafts and produce, including strenne (Christmas branches traditionally exchanged among Romans) and Christmas foods such as torrone (nutty nougat) and cotton candy. The market also gives visitors the opportunity to see the Fountain of the Moor and the Fountain of Neptune, which stand at the northern end of the square and are some of Rome's most famous sights.

  • Piazza Navona (1.45 km) - Piazza Navona is Rome's most famous square, recognisable for its three fountains. The spot where Piazza Navona stands used to be the site of a Roman stadium. Now, the atmosphere is buzzing with various cafes lining the square and artists plying their wares. During December, Piazza Navona is also home to an excellent Christmas market.

  • Capitoline Museums (1.45 km) - Rome's excellent Capitoline Museums are home to an exhaustive collection of Roman sculpture. Housed in two buildings on opposite sides of the attractive Campidoglio square, highlights include fragments of a once immense statue of Constantine (the finger alone is huge), excellently-preserved murals and there is even a section dedicated to Renaissance art. The views across the Roman Forum from the building on the right of the square are also stunning.

  • Crypta Balbi (1.26 km) - Crypta Balbi is an interesting archeological museum built on the site of an ancient Roman theatre, whose ruins can be visited beneath the museum.

  • Galleria Spada (0.92 km) - The Galleria Spada is a collection of paintings and Roman sculpture housed in the Palazzo Spada. There are works by artists such as Titian and Guercino and in one of the corridors (seen on a guided tour), Borromini’s clever use of perspective makes the room appear much longer than it actually is.

  • Rome Synagogue (0.9 km) - Rome Synagogue, located in the heart of the old ghetto, is the principal Jewish monument in the city. You can take a guided tour of the synagogue then visit the interesting museum which details the history of Roman Jews.

  • Piazza Bocca della Verità (1.13 km) - Piazza Bocca della Verità is home to Rome’s most unusual monument, the Mouth of Truth. Located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Mouth of Truth is actually a drain cover in the shape of a head and was used as a primitive lie-detector because it was believed that if someone told a lie whilst placing their hand inside the Mouth of Truth, it would be bitten off! The piazza is built on the site of the oldest forum in ancient Rome and is also home to two of Rome's oldest temples: the Temple of Portunus (now a church) and the Temple of Hercules Victor (or Temple of Vesta) which is the oldest intact temple in the city.

  • Isola Tiberina (0.89 km) - The Isola Tiberiana is the small but beautiful island in the middle of the Tiber, linked by bridges to the historic centre of Rome and the attractive Trastevere district.

  • Palazzo Corsini National Gallery (0.77 km) - Rome’s Palazzo Corsini National Gallery houses an interesting collection of art including works by Caravaggio, Rubens and Van Dyck. After exploring the gallery, you can visit the Rome Botanical Gardens which are found in the grounds of the palazzo.

  • Villa Farnesina (0.77 km) - Rome’s Villa Farnesina is a sumptuous mansion containing some excellent Renaissance frescoes by Raphael.
