- Vesuvius (13.96 km) - Reaching the crater of Vesuvius is fairly easy: you can either tackle the walk up the sides of the volcano that buried Pompei and Herculaneum in a devastating eruption, or take a bus or minibus from Ercolano. At the base of Vesuvius you can visit the informative Osservatorio Vesuviano museum and wander around the picturesque Vesuvius National Park.
- Pompei (0.95 km) - The sheer size of the Pompei excavations is astounding. The ancient Roman city was so quickly buried following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD that many of the buildings and mosaics remain well-preserved. You need a lot of time to see the whole site, but highlights include the Vesuvius-dominated Forum, the Amphitheatre, the House of the Faun and the beautiful frescoes at the Villa dei Misteri.
- Osservatorio Vesuviano (12.96 km) - The Vesuvius Observatory near Ercolano is home to an excellent exhibition on the history of Vesuvius and of volcanoes in general. You can take a guided tour of the museum and the Observatory also organises seminars and lectures.
- Herculaneum (14.56 km) - Although smaller than Pompei, Herculaneum is in a better state of preservation. Both cities were buried following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and the modern town of Ercolano is actually built over 15 metres above the ancient city. Highlights include the Thermae baths, the House of the Carbonised Furniture and the Villa of the Papyri, home of some charred Roman scrolls.
- Museo Correale di Terranova (17.05 km) - Sorrentoâs Museo Correale di Terranova is an excellent museum (well worth a visit) dedicated to painting and decorative arts, including Sorrento's famous art of inlaid wood, originating in and around Naples. There is also an interesting collection of clocks and porcelain.
- Sorrento Sail (15.11 km) - Sorrento Sail offer you the chance to charter a boat for trips to various destinations in the Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi coast including Capri, Procida, Ischia, Positano and the Li Galli islands.
- Cooperativa Sant'Andrea (15.14 km) - The Cooperativa SantâAndrea in Amalfi is a touristic boat service that offers trips along the beautiful Amalfi coast, to the Emerald Cave and to Positano. You can also book a mini-cruise to Capri, or just take one of their regular ferry services to and from various resorts along the Amalfi coast.
- Amalfi Cathedral (15.06 km) - Attractive Amalfi Cathedral, positioned at the top of an impressive flight of steps, is home to the body of Saint Andrew. Next to the Cathedral are the beautiful cloisters and there is also an interesting museum housing relics and artefacts from the Middle Ages.
- Villa Rufolo, Ravello (14.29 km) - The extensive gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello are the stunning venue of the outdoor Ravello Music Festival (Jul). From here the views of the rugged Amalfi coast are simply stunning.
