Local Attractions near Hotel Villa San Pio

  • Rome Ostiense Station (1 km) - Rome Ostiense Station serves both local and inter-regional routes and is also on the Metro B line. A long-distance train from Turin passes through on the way down to Sicily and the beach at Ostia Lido and the excavations at Ostia Antica are easily accessible from the Lido di Ostia station nearby. There is also a regular train to Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) airport.

  • Roman Forum (1.19 km) - The Roman Forum is justifiably one of Rome's most visited monuments. Once the heart of political and social life in Ancient Rome, wandering through the ruins, arches and columns, you are transported back to an ancient era. The most obvious sight, although dominated by the Colosseum, is the 81 AD Arch of Titus. Also worthy of note are the Curia, the House of the Vestal Virgins and the temple to Julius Caesar, where the great Emperor was cremated.

  • Capitoline Museums (1.29 km) - Rome's excellent Capitoline Museums are home to an exhaustive collection of Roman sculpture. Housed in two buildings on opposite sides of the attractive Campidoglio square, highlights include fragments of a once immense statue of Constantine (the finger alone is huge), excellently-preserved murals and there is even a section dedicated to Renaissance art. The views across the Roman Forum from the building on the right of the square are also stunning.

  • San Pietro in Carcere (1.32 km) - San Pietro in Carcere is a small church built over the prison where Saint Peter was held by the Romans. Located by the side of the Roman Forum, the only remaining portion of the prison is accessed via a narrow staircase, the walls of which are supposed to contain a dent made by Saint Peter’s head as he fell down.

  • Rome Synagogue (1.17 km) - Rome Synagogue, located in the heart of the old ghetto, is the principal Jewish monument in the city. You can take a guided tour of the synagogue then visit the interesting museum which details the history of Roman Jews.

  • Piazza Bocca della Verità (0.84 km) - Piazza Bocca della Verità is home to Rome’s most unusual monument, the Mouth of Truth. Located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Mouth of Truth is actually a drain cover in the shape of a head and was used as a primitive lie-detector because it was believed that if someone told a lie whilst placing their hand inside the Mouth of Truth, it would be bitten off! The piazza is built on the site of the oldest forum in ancient Rome and is also home to two of Rome's oldest temples: the Temple of Portunus (now a church) and the Temple of Hercules Victor (or Temple of Vesta) which is the oldest intact temple in the city.

  • Isola Tiberina (1 km) - The Isola Tiberiana is the small but beautiful island in the middle of the Tiber, linked by bridges to the historic centre of Rome and the attractive Trastevere district.

  • Palatine Hill (1.02 km) - The Palatine Hill is claimed to be the site where Rome was founded. As with the Forum, the majority of the magnificent buildings that once stood here and now in ruins, but you can still get a feel of the sheer size of them. The Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana were the homes of the Roman Emperors and the Cryptoporticus used to link these to Nero’s Domus Aurea on the other side of the Colosseum. Pre-dating these however are the recent excavations of an Iron Age village, below the Farnese Gardens.

  • Villa Celimontana Park (1.24 km) - Villa Celimontana park is a peaceful public garden just south of the centre of Rome. Located on the Celio hill, the park is a great place to go for a picnic or to enjoy one of the various cultural events held throughout the year, including the popular jazz festival in the summer.

  • Baths of Caracalla (1.02 km) - Rome’s huge Baths of Caracalla are a testament to the immensity of Roman architecture and give you a good idea of Roman public life.
