  • Etruscan Museum (28.6 km) - Cortona’s Etruscan Museum houses an excellent collection of artefacts dating back to the 5th century BC. Of these, the prize exhibit is the Lampadario etrusco, a bronze lamp decorated with mythical creatures. The museum also has a small, but interesting Egyptian section and sections dedicated to Roman and Greek bronzes and ceramics. You can also book a guided tour of the museum which includes a visit to the Etruscan tombs outside Cortona.

  • Eugubine Tablets (25.7 km) - The Eugubine Tablets are a remarkable series of 7 bronze sheets bearing Etruscan inscriptions that date back to the 2nd century BC. Now housed in the Gubbio Civic Museum, the tablets (discovered in the 15th century) document the ancient history of the city and are written in both the Etruscan and Latin languages.

  • Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo, Gubbio (25.86 km) - Set on a hill above the picturesque town of Gubbio, the Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo is the place favoured by locals for starting a relaxed weekend walk. The most stunning way to reach the basilica is in a cable car that hovers over the trees of Mount Ingino but you can also decide to walk up or take the bus. Sant’Ubaldo is famous for being the end-point of Gubbio’s Corsa dei Ceri (15th May), a race with medieval origins where three teams of men from the city dress in costume and proceed to run through the city carrying a huge ceri (called candles, but really wooden poles) dedicated to one of three saints. The rules are somewhat complex though and it id not even really a race as the Sant’Ubaldo cero always has to be the first to enter the basilica (where the ceri are normally housed).

  • Gubbio Roman Amphitheatre (25.37 km) - Gubbio’s Roman Amphitheatre was one of the largest of its time (1st century AD) and is still in use today. The amphitheatre used to be able to house 10,000 spectators, but the need for stone in the Middle Ages has meant that now only part of the bottom ring and a small section of the lower ring of arches remains. You can only visit the amphitheatre in the mornings, but if you are in Gubbio in July or August you may be fortunate enough to get tickets for one of the outdoor performances of classical plays held in the theatre.
