Local Attractions near Hotel Euro Quiris

  • Colosseum (1.73 km) - As the most recognisable mounument in Rome, the Colosseum does not fail to impress. Begun in 72 AD under the orders of Roman Emperor Vespasian and finished 8 years later under his son, the Flavian Ampitheatre (as it was then called) was actually built on the site of an drained lake where Nero had once erected a statue of himself. Only a section of the outer ring is still standing, but this does not detract from the grandeur of the Colosseum. The interior is even more impressive - there was sufficient seating room for up to 87,000 spectators and the numerous passageways below floor level (where the gladiators, animals and prisoners would await their fate in the arena) demonstrate the sophistication of Roman architecture. One amazing fact, and a precursor to modern stadiums, is that the whole Colosseum used to be covered with canvas to protect spectators from the elements!

  • Rome Termini Station (0.41 km) - Rome's Termini Station is the main destination for rail passengers into the Eternal City and is conveniently linked to both the Metro A and B lines. Located to the east of the city centre near the arty San Lorenzo district, the station serves all the major Italian destinations. It is also a Eurostar hub, ensuring that Florence, Milan and Venice are within easy reach.

  • San Giovanni in Laterano (1.69 km) - The oldest church in the world, San Giovanni in Laterano is actually the cathedral of Rome. Once the main residence of the Pope, the façade is quite similar to that of Saint Peter's, the current Papal seat. Inside the cathedral, behind the altar are the heads of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The most important holy relic, the Scala Santa (Holy stairs), are also said to be the ones from Pontius Pilate's house.

  • Domus Aurea (1.52 km) - The Domus Aurea (Golden House) used to be the magnificent gold-covered residence of Emperor Nero, who profited from the great fire of Rome in 64 AD by using the cleared land to build his new 'house'. Recently re-opened to the public, highlights of the guided tour are the Octagonal Room and the well-preserved frescoes lining many of the walls.

  • Palazzo Barberini (1.34 km) - Rome’s Palazzo Barberini is a beautiful building which is home to the Gallery of Ancient Art. The works housed in the elaborately frescoed rooms are mainly of Italian origin and include some masterpieces by Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Raphael and Guercino.

  • Palazzo Colonna (1.79 km) - Palazzo Colonna in Rome is a huge complex made up of two wings: the Galleria Colonna and Princess Isabel’s quarters. The Galleria is a series of lavishly decorated rooms housing works by artists such as Tintoretto, Guercino and Veronese. On the other side of the palace, Princess Isabel’s quarters are even more lavish in decoration and the Dining Room is absolutely stunning.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome (0.99 km) - The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of four main churches in Rome. Dating back to the 5th century AD, it was built on the orders of Pope Liberius who had a vision that he should build a church on the Esquiline Hill on a site that was marked out by snowfall. Hence, the church was originally called the Santa Maria della Neve (Saint Mary of the Snow) and it is also known as the Basilica Liberiana after the Pope. The church has the highest bell-tower in Rome, a huge façade and various mosaics and frescoes inside.

  • Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (0.66 km) - Rome’s Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (along with Palazzo Altemps) forms the excellent National Roman Museum. The palazzo houses a wealth of Roman and Greek statues, bronzes, coins and frescoes, but pride of place goes to the stunning mosaics taken from Roman villas. The museum also boasts the only known Roman mummy, found in a nearby tomb.

  • Galleria Borghese (1.77 km) - Rome's Galleria Borghese is a fabulous museum comprised of a wealth of sculpture and important paintings. The sculpture dates back to both the Roman period and the Renaissance and the Pinacoteca (art gallery) holds works by Italian masters such as Raphael, Caravaggio, Perugino and Bernini.

  • Teatro Eliseo (1.48 km) - During the season the Teatro Eliseo in Rome is home to a series of modern and traditional plays.
