Local Attractions near Hotel Athena

  • Campo (0.54 km) - Siena's huge Campo square is the focal point of the city. Apart from being home to numerous cafes and bars, the world-famous Palio is also run here in July and August. Also lining the Campo are the impressive Torre del Mangia (from where the views across Siena are excellent) and the Palazzo Pubblico, home to the excellent Civic Museum.

  • Siena Cathedral (0.38 km) - Stately Siena Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in Tuscany. The marble façade was designed by Pisano, and inside you will find works by Donatello, Michelangelo and Bernini. However, it is the incredible use of perspective in Pinturicchio's frescoes in the Piccolomini Library that will really have you astounded.

  • Siena Civic Museum (0.54 km) - Siena Civic Museum is the finest museum in the city. Located inside the attractive Palazzo del Pubblico, the Civic Museum holds a wealth of brilliant frescoes, with the most impressive being found in the Sala del Mappamondo and the Sala della Pace. There are also many paintings and a room detailing events in the Unification of Italy.

  • Santa Maria Hospital (0.3 km) - The huge Santa Maria Hospital was the main medical institution in Siena for nearly 900 years. Considered the third most important monument in Siena (behind the Cathedral and the Palazzo Pubblico), the hospital is now an excellent museum containing numerous works of art. The highlight is the Sala del Pellegrinaio (Pilgrim’s Room) which boasts some amazing frescoes detailing the history of the hospital, but also worth a look are the church of Santissima Annunziata (which contains the oldest organ in Europe), the Cappella del Manto and the Oratorio di Santa Caterina della Notte. The medieval hospital also houses Siena’s Archaeological Museum, containing mainly Etruscan and Roman exhibits.

  • San Domenico (0.54 km) - The huge red-brick basilica of San Domenico, set on a small hill in Siena, can be seen for miles around. As the former headquarters of the Dominican movement in Siena, the history of the church is closely related to Saint Catherine of Siena, one of its most famous adherents. Inside, the church is airy and contains frescoes by Lippo Memmi and Andrea Vanni. However, pride of place goes to the chapel of Saint Catherine (patron saint of Italy) which contains her head and finger on full view.

  • Saint Catherine's House (0.54 km) - Saint Catherine’s house was turned into a shrine following her canonisation. This was the house where Catherine confined herself in order to avoid entering a convent (the only option for an unmarried girl in Medieval and Renaissance Italy). Although the original house has been substantially modified (e.g. the kitchen is now an oratory), you can still visit the ‘cell’ where Catherine confined herself and which now contains some beautiful frescoes. In front of the house you may be fortunate enough to see some of the youths from the Goose contrada of Siena practising the medieval art of flag-throwing.

  • Palazzo delle Papesse Contemporary Art Centre (0.37 km) - The Palazzo delle Papesse Contemporary Art Centre is an innovative museum hosting temporary exhibitions by modern artists. Until May 2005 you can take a guided tour of the Sottovoce exhibition by Elisa Sighicelli and the Scottish artist Anya Gallacio’s The Look of Things. Also on display until May is the exhibition of Sergio Prego’s interesting Sunoise, two fluorescent tubes rotated by mechanical arms. The Art Centre also organises a variety of concerts, seminars and book promotions.

  • Banchi di Sopra confectioners (0.7 km) - To sample some of the typical cuisine of Siena, visit the confectioners along the Via Banchi di Sopra. Traditional Sienese specialities include: panforte (hard cake made of dried fruit and nuts), ricciarelli, cantucci (almond-flavoured biscuits) and cavallucci (candied fruit and nut biscuits). These can all be bought at the Conca d’Oro branch of the Pasticcerie Nannini, the oldest confectioners in Siena, on the via Banchi di Sopra. Along the street there are also a number of excellent gelaterie where you can try some authentic Italian ice-cream.

  • Siena football stadium (0.73 km) - Siena's Stadio Artemio Franchi is home to Italian Serie A football team Siena. Matches are played at the 13,000 seater stadium almost every other weekend during the football season, but the small capacity means that you will need to get tickets in advance.

  • Palio of Siena (0.6 km) - The Palio horse race takes place around the Piazza del Campo. It consists of jockeys riding bareback around the main square three times and is over in about 90 seconds. The Palio is the banner, decorated with an image of the Virgin Mary, which is presented to the winner of the race. The scenes of celebration are amazing with firecrackers, brass bands, choirs and dancing. It is best to head for the Campo as all other viewpoints will be booked in advance.
