Local Attractions near MSNSuites Palazzo Galletti

  • Duomo - Cathedral of Florence (0.34 km) -

  • Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (0.24 km) - The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is an excellent museum detailing the construction of Florence Cathedral. Among the Renaissance masterpieces exhibited are a Pieta' by Michelangelo, choir-lofts by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, an altar sculpted by Verrocchio and Michelozzo and a model of Brunelleschi's dome.

  • Orsanmichele (0.44 km) - Orsanmichele is one of the most important churches in Florence. Originally built as a grain store, it now houses important Renaissance works by Donatello, Ghiberti and Verrocchio. You can also still visit the original grain store above Orsanmichele.

  • Bargello Museum (0.21 km) - Florence's Bargello Museum houses the largest collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture in Italy. Housed in the impressive Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the museum has rooms dedicated to Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Giovanni and Andrea della Robbia.

  • Spedale degli Innocenti (0.45 km) - The porticoed Spedale degli Innocenti in Florence was the first orphan hospital in Europe. Designed by Brunelleschi (architect of the famous Cathedral dome), the hospital now houses works by Botticelli, Luca della Robbia and Ghirlandaio.

  • Palazzo Vecchio (0.47 km) - Florence's Palazzo Vecchio is one of the symbols of the city. Originally home to the Florentine republican government, the ruling Medici then took over the palazzo for a few years and the lavish décor you can now see is largely due to their court artist Giorgio Vasari. Most rooms are elaborately frescoed by Vasari and Ghirlandaio and the Map Room (once Machiavelli's office) is lined by Renaissance paintings of all known world geography at the time. You might even encounter 'Vasari' himself who will explain his work. It is also worth booking a guided tour of the secret passageways the Medici family had built.

  • Casa Buonarroti (0.37 km) - Fans of Michelangelo should not miss Casa Buonarroti. Many of his early works, including the Madonna della Scala and the Battle of the Centaurs, are displayed here at the former home of Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger. There are also many works by other Italian artists inspired by Michelangelo's style and various elaborately frescoed rooms commissioned by Michelangelo the Younger in honour of his famous relative.

  • Santa Croce (0.43 km) - The impressive Gothic church of Santa Croce is home to the tombs of some of Florence's most famous sons. Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli are all commemorated at the former Franciscan headquarters, as is Dante (although he is actually buried in Ravenna). Santa Croce is also noted for the stunning frescoes in its chapels, painted by Vasari and his school, and the peaceful cloisters designed by Brunelleschi.

  • Historical Football Match, Florence (0.36 km) - Florence's historical football match is a rather brutal affair battled out in Piazza Santa Croce. 27 teams representing Florence's four quarters battle it out for 50 minutes with a referee, aided by 6 linespeople, making sure that the complicated rules of the game are complied with. The game is cross between rugby and football. The players parade in historical costumes before the match and continue to wear their costumes during the game.

  • Scoppio del Carro - Explosion of the Cart (0.37 km) - The Scoppio del Carro (or Explosion of the Cart) takes place each year in the Piazza del Duomo. This is a historical event where a dove-shaped rocket called the 'Colombina' flies out of the famous Duomo and sets fires to a huge wodden cart in the square. It's a pagan ritual and is meant to secure good luck for the city and a good harvest - and now not only with harvests but in the everyday life and business of its citizens.
