  • Doge's Palace (0.42 km) - The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) in Venice's Saint Mark's Square is a must-see on any trip to the city. Official residence of the ruling doge until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, it is now an excellent museum of Venetian life and art. Highlights include the Doge's quarters, the Museo dell'Opera and the prisons (accessed via the Bridge of Sighs).

  • La Fenice theatre (0.67 km) - La Fenice in Venice is one of Italy's most famous opera houses. Recently restored following a devastating fire, the façade of the theatre is unimpressive, but the interior is spectacular. If you are unable to get tickets for a performance, you can still take a guided tour of the theatre. Also if you take a wander round to the back of La Fenice, you might see the unusual sight of a barge bringing some of the stage scenery into the theatre.

  • Ca D'Oro (0.62 km) - The Ca D'Oro (Golden House) is one of the finest palaces on Venice's Grand Canal. Originally an aristocratic residence, it now houses the Franchetti Gallery, a collection of bronzes, paintings and sculpture. Inside, the views along the Grand Canal are excellent.

  • Campo San Bartolomeo (0.27 km) - Campo San Bartolomeo is the favourite evening meeting place for Venetians, and can get extremely crowded. If you can cope with the crowds, it's definitely the place to check out modern-day life in Venice.

  • San Zanipolo (0.22 km) - Venice's huge Santi Zanipolo church contains the tombs of 25 Venetian doges. Inside Santi Zanipolo (Venetian for saints John and Paul), the most important relic is a foot of Saint Catherine of Siena and there are also works by Bellini, Lotto and Veronese. On the opposite side of the canal is one of only three gondola factories (squero) left in Venice.

  • Telecom Italia Future Centre (0.33 km) - The Telecom Italia Future Centre is a must for Information Technology fans. More than just a museum, you can actually try out most of the technology on display. Your possibilities include trying out the games room, creating and animating your own virtual character and 'meeting' famous people from Venice's past.

  • Museum of Oriental Art (0.83 km) - Venice's Museum of Oriental Art is one of most important collections of Japanese art in the world. Housed in Ca' Pesaro on the Grand Canal, the museum exhibits Japanese armoury, weapons and lacquer work.
