Local Attractions near Anfiteatro Flavio B&B

  • Roman Forum (0.56 km) - The Roman Forum is justifiably one of Rome's most visited monuments. Once the heart of political and social life in Ancient Rome, wandering through the ruins, arches and columns, you are transported back to an ancient era. The most obvious sight, although dominated by the Colosseum, is the 81 AD Arch of Titus. Also worthy of note are the Curia, the House of the Vestal Virgins and the temple to Julius Caesar, where the great Emperor was cremated.

  • Monument to Victor Emmanuel (0.68 km) - Rome's Monument to Victor Emanuel was built to commemorate the Unification of Italy and now houses the interesting Unification museum. Half-way up the large staircase is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the colonnade at the top of the monument boasts some beautiful ceiling decoration. From the top of the monument there are excellent views across the Roman Forum and the Colosseum in one direction and of Saint Peter’s in the other.

  • Capitoline Museums (0.67 km) - Rome's excellent Capitoline Museums are home to an exhaustive collection of Roman sculpture. Housed in two buildings on opposite sides of the attractive Campidoglio square, highlights include fragments of a once immense statue of Constantine (the finger alone is huge), excellently-preserved murals and there is even a section dedicated to Renaissance art. The views across the Roman Forum from the building on the right of the square are also stunning.

  • Domus Aurea (0.67 km) - The Domus Aurea (Golden House) used to be the magnificent gold-covered residence of Emperor Nero, who profited from the great fire of Rome in 64 AD by using the cleared land to build his new 'house'. Recently re-opened to the public, highlights of the guided tour are the Octagonal Room and the well-preserved frescoes lining many of the walls.

  • San Pietro in Carcere (0.42 km) - San Pietro in Carcere is a small church built over the prison where Saint Peter was held by the Romans. Located by the side of the Roman Forum, the only remaining portion of the prison is accessed via a narrow staircase, the walls of which are supposed to contain a dent made by Saint Peter’s head as he fell down.

  • Palazzo Colonna (0.51 km) - Palazzo Colonna in Rome is a huge complex made up of two wings: the Galleria Colonna and Princess Isabel’s quarters. The Galleria is a series of lavishly decorated rooms housing works by artists such as Tintoretto, Guercino and Veronese. On the other side of the palace, Princess Isabel’s quarters are even more lavish in decoration and the Dining Room is absolutely stunning.

  • Trajan Forum (0.45 km) - The ruins of the Markets of Trajan, a multi-tiered Roman shopping complex, give you an idea of the sophistication of Roman life. The markets formed part of the Trajan Forum, which took over from the Roman Forum (on the other side of the road) as the main political and social centre of ancient Rome. At one end of the Trajan Forum is the huge Trajan Column, decorated with battle scenes to commemorate one of the Emperor’s victories in war in 112 AD.

  • Palatine Hill (0.72 km) - The Palatine Hill is claimed to be the site where Rome was founded. As with the Forum, the majority of the magnificent buildings that once stood here and now in ruins, but you can still get a feel of the sheer size of them. The Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana were the homes of the Roman Emperors and the Cryptoporticus used to link these to Nero’s Domus Aurea on the other side of the Colosseum. Pre-dating these however are the recent excavations of an Iron Age village, below the Farnese Gardens.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome (0.44 km) - The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of four main churches in Rome. Dating back to the 5th century AD, it was built on the orders of Pope Liberius who had a vision that he should build a church on the Esquiline Hill on a site that was marked out by snowfall. Hence, the church was originally called the Santa Maria della Neve (Saint Mary of the Snow) and it is also known as the Basilica Liberiana after the Pope. The church has the highest bell-tower in Rome, a huge façade and various mosaics and frescoes inside.

  • Teatro Eliseo (0.27 km) - During the season the Teatro Eliseo in Rome is home to a series of modern and traditional plays.
