Local Attractions near Villa Pitiana

  • Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (20.96 km) - The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is an excellent museum detailing the construction of Florence Cathedral. Among the Renaissance masterpieces exhibited are a Pieta' by Michelangelo, choir-lofts by Donatello and Luca della Robbia, an altar sculpted by Verrocchio and Michelozzo and a model of Brunelleschi's dome.

  • Bargello Museum (20.92 km) - Florence's Bargello Museum houses the largest collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture in Italy. Housed in the impressive Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the museum has rooms dedicated to Renaissance masters such as Michelangelo, Verrocchio and Giovanni and Andrea della Robbia.

  • Spedale degli Innocenti (20.82 km) - The porticoed Spedale degli Innocenti in Florence was the first orphan hospital in Europe. Designed by Brunelleschi (architect of the famous Cathedral dome), the hospital now houses works by Botticelli, Luca della Robbia and Ghirlandaio.

  • Casa Buonarroti (20.43 km) - Fans of Michelangelo should not miss Casa Buonarroti. Many of his early works, including the Madonna della Scala and the Battle of the Centaurs, are displayed here at the former home of Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger. There are also many works by other Italian artists inspired by Michelangelo's style and various elaborately frescoed rooms commissioned by Michelangelo the Younger in honour of his famous relative.

  • Florence Archeological Museum (20.67 km) - Florence Archeological Museum houses one of the most important Etruscan collections in the world. There are also excellent sections dedicated to Roman and Greek archeological finds and an extensive Egyptian collection. On Saturday mornings you can also visit the peaceful Museum gardens.

  • Santa Croce (20.52 km) - The impressive Gothic church of Santa Croce is home to the tombs of some of Florence's most famous sons. Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli are all commemorated at the former Franciscan headquarters, as is Dante (although he is actually buried in Ravenna). Santa Croce is also noted for the stunning frescoes in its chapels, painted by Vasari and his school, and the peaceful cloisters designed by Brunelleschi.

  • San Miniato al Monte (20.12 km) - Florence's San Miniato al Monte church is the premier example of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. The green and white marble façade inspired Alberti's design of the façade of Santa Maria Novella. Inside, works can be found by Italian masters such as Michelozzo, Luca della Robbia and Uccello. From here, the views across the red-topped roofs of Florence towards the Cathedral are spectacular.

  • Fiorentina football stadium (19.22 km) - Italian Serie A football team Fiorentina play at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence. Matches are played almost every other weekend during the football season and the large 47,000 capacity means that tickets are usually fairly easy to come across (depending on the opponent).

  • Fiesole Archeological Museum (19.49 km) - Fiesole was a very important town in Etruscan history and the excellent Archeological Museum reflects this. The Museum came about as a result of excavations on a Roman theatre found behind it in the Archeological Area (which you can also visit) and houses the finds from the theatre along with the Etruscan artefacts. Next door is the Bandini Museum, a collection of medieval Tuscan painting.

  • Historical Football Match, Florence (20.59 km) - Florence's historical football match is a rather brutal affair battled out in Piazza Santa Croce. 27 teams representing Florence's four quarters battle it out for 50 minutes with a referee, aided by 6 linespeople, making sure that the complicated rules of the game are complied with. The game is cross between rugby and football. The players parade in historical costumes before the match and continue to wear their costumes during the game.
