Via Interna Delle Mura, 21, Spoleto, 06049

Sun-Thu: €95 | Fri-Sat: €95

(for a double room)

It was on a day in 1198 that a spring miraculously gushed out in the garden of a Spoleto convent by the hands of Pope Innocent III. Known since then as "the holy wellspring", the waters were believed to have healing powers and for this reason, it was ordained that pilgrims could freely draw from the well. In 1601, the town's vice-governor arranged for the restoration of the spring and a tablet, which still remains today, was placed to serve as a memorial of the event.
During the 19th century, a tannery was erected on the site. A fine work of architecture, the establishment fell into ruins after housing the business until the middle of the 20th century, when it was moved out of the town's historical centre. In 1993, Paolo Zuccari bought the building, restoring it to its former beauty and radically transforming its interiors.
Today, Hotel San Luca is a small, charming hotel run by the Zuccari family. Elegant and sophisticated, it features a warm and familiar atmosphere. You will be totally wrapped up in the old ambience of this hotel and will find it hard to believe that most of what you see is new following the drastic changes made to the inside of the building during the restoration.
As you enter the hotel, freshness and brightness will surround you: the natural light filters through the arcade that opens into the central courtyard and reflects on the room's pastel walls. The hall is furnished with comfortable peach armchairs arranged around an 18th century fireplace, and with antique pieces that add to the warmth, making you feel right at home. Two canaries occupy an antique birdcage, which blends nicely with the background of pastel colours from the striking collection of 19th century tureens on display.
Rooms are spacious, colourful, soundproof, and extremely clean, filled with amenities and featuring 2 meter-wide double beds. The large bathrooms are faced with Carrara marble, some offering whirlpool bathtubs and all including telephone, towel heater, and antifogging mirror. The hotel is air-conditioned and drapery- and carpet-free. The building complies with all the current regulations.

Local Attractions near Hotel San Luca

  • Spoleto Roman Theatre (0.27 km) - Spoleto Roman Theatre has stood the test of being buried under medieval construction, yet still maintains its original shape. Performances are still held here during the Spoleto Festival (July); the orchestra still sit on the original Roman tiled floor and the audience have the chance to experience a taste of Roman cultural life by sitting on the original stone seating. Part of the theatre remains covered under the Church of Sant’Agata, which backs onto the stage and now houses the interesting Spoleto Archeological Museum.

  • Spoleto Cathedral (0.5 km) - Spoleto Cathedral is the most beautiful church in Umbria. The attractive façade, complete with rose windows and a golden mosaic, is set against the stunning backdrop of the Umbrian hills, but it is really the interior that houses the treasures. The astounding fresco cycle of the life of the Virgin decorating the apse was painted by Filippo Lippi, whose body is now housed in the Cathedral. Also worthy of note are the Erioli Chapels which house vivid frescoes by Giovanni da Spoleto and an intriguing Madonna and Child by Pinturicchio. The steps leading up to the Cathedral are the favoured spot for spectators attending the finale of the annual Spoleto Festival (July).

  • Pinacoteca, Spoleto (0.42 km) - Spoleto’s Pinacoteca (art gallery) is a fine collection of medieval and Renaissance art located in part of the Palazzo del Municipio. A guide shows you the paintings, mainly by Umbrian artists including the famous Perugino, that line the elegantly decorated rooms. However, given that the Pinacoteca also holds weddings, you will need to check if it is open. The entrance ticket also includes a visit to a 1st century AD Roman House located under the Palazzo del Municipio that still contains the original mosaic floors and remains of columns.

  • Rocca, Spoleto (0.73 km) - The Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto is a beautiful medieval castle set just above the town. Originally built as a Papal fortress, the Rocca was later turned into a high-security prison which remained in use until the 1980s. During the guided tour of the castle you can still see where some of the cells used to be. The castle also houses the museum of the Duchy of Spoleto and has an open-air theatre with a capacity of 1200. From the Rocca there are excellent views of the Umbrian countryside surrounding Spoleto and the Ponte delle Torri, an impressive medieval bridge.

  • Castellina, Norcia (29.97 km) - The Castellina in Norcia is an attractive medieval castle set in the heart of this beautiful town at the base of the Monti Sibillini. Originally used as a papal fortress, then as the residence of prefects sent from Rome, the Castellina now houses the Civic and Diocesan Museum and contains lots of paintings and wooden sculptures. On the ground floor you also will find the Massenzi Collection, an assortment of ancient ceramics and a reconstruction of the tomb of a warrior prince, whereas the upper floor is home to an archaeological collection of artefacts found in ancient burial sites.

  • Fiume Corno Rafting and Kayak Centre (24.27 km) - The Fiume Corno Rafting and Kayak Centre offer everyone, regardless of ability, the possibility of a white-water ride or a guided kayak down the Corno river in the Monti Sibillini National Park. You can also choose from mountain biking, hiking, horseriding, canyoning, orienteering or free climbing, all accompanied by an experienced guide. Also in June 2005, Fiume Corno (also known as Rafting Umbria) are taking part in the Umbria Green Festival during which you can discover more about the Umbrian countryside whilst taking part in one of over 20 sports on offer.
