Local Attractions near Hotel Silva

  • Rome Termini Station (2.02 km) - Rome's Termini Station is the main destination for rail passengers into the Eternal City and is conveniently linked to both the Metro A and B lines. Located to the east of the city centre near the arty San Lorenzo district, the station serves all the major Italian destinations. It is also a Eurostar hub, ensuring that Florence, Milan and Venice are within easy reach.

  • Rome Tiburtina Station (1.37 km) - Located near to the La Sapienza university in the north of the city, Rome Tiburtina Station serves both local and national destinations and is on Metro line B. A regular train connects to Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) airport, as does a night bus. Eurolines buses depart from opposite the station and smaller buses also serve regional destinations.

  • Spanish Steps (2.88 km) - The Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna) are at their best in the spring, when the steps leading up to the Trinita' dei Monti church are ablaze with colourful flowers. However, it is still worth a visit at other times of the year for its cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Keats-Shelley Museum is located on the piazza at the foot of the steps and the nearby Via del Corso and Via dei Condotti are good for shopping.

  • Keats-Shelley Memorial House (2.88 km) - The Keats-Shelley Memorial House is located right next to the Spanish Steps in Rome. John Keats spent the last few months of his life here and Percy Bysshe Shelley also lived in the house which is now a museum dedicated to both these Romantic poets. The museum houses numerous manuscripts, paintings and articles relating to the poets. There are also some exhibits relating to Byron, a poem by Oscar Wilde and some letters written by Wordsworth and Robert Browning.

  • Palazzo Barberini (2.5 km) - Rome’s Palazzo Barberini is a beautiful building which is home to the Gallery of Ancient Art. The works housed in the elaborately frescoed rooms are mainly of Italian origin and include some masterpieces by Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Raphael and Guercino.

  • Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome (2.55 km) - The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of four main churches in Rome. Dating back to the 5th century AD, it was built on the orders of Pope Liberius who had a vision that he should build a church on the Esquiline Hill on a site that was marked out by snowfall. Hence, the church was originally called the Santa Maria della Neve (Saint Mary of the Snow) and it is also known as the Basilica Liberiana after the Pope. The church has the highest bell-tower in Rome, a huge façade and various mosaics and frescoes inside.

  • Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (2.07 km) - Rome’s Palazzo Massimo alle Terme (along with Palazzo Altemps) forms the excellent National Roman Museum. The palazzo houses a wealth of Roman and Greek statues, bronzes, coins and frescoes, but pride of place goes to the stunning mosaics taken from Roman villas. The museum also boasts the only known Roman mummy, found in a nearby tomb.

  • Galleria Borghese (1.83 km) - Rome's Galleria Borghese is a fabulous museum comprised of a wealth of sculpture and important paintings. The sculpture dates back to both the Roman period and the Renaissance and the Pinacoteca (art gallery) holds works by Italian masters such as Raphael, Caravaggio, Perugino and Bernini.

  • Teatro Parioli (2.55 km) - The Teatro Parioli in Rome is home to the Maurizio Costanzo Show, the Italian equivalent of Parkinson. It is worth going to the show if you can get a ticket, if for no other reason than to marvel at the Italian broadcasting style. The theatre also stages various performances of modern productions throughout the year: the 2005 season will include Bravi a letto (roughly translated as In Bed with the Good People) in April and May.

  • Priscilla Catacombs (1.81 km) - Rome’s Catacombs of Priscilla (attached to the monastery of the Benedictines of Priscilla) are an ancient burial site in a stunning setting that house the bodies of 7 early Popes and many early martyrs.
