Local Attractions near Hotel Crivi's

  • Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (1.38 km) -

  • Milan Cathedral (1.21 km) - The sheer immensity of Milan's impressive Gothic Cathedral (Duomo) is due to the fact that it took over 400 years to complete. Unfortunately the façade is currently covered for restoration purposes, but you can still get a feel of the architecture from both inside and outside the cathedral. A nail from Christ's cross is the most important holy relic and St Augustine, one of the fathers of Christianity, was baptized in the 4th century baptistery. Undeniably one of the highlights is a trip onto the cathedral's roof, offering a stunning view of the city and, on a clear day, even the Alps.

  • La Scala Opera House (1.55 km) - The recently-restored La Scala Opera House in Milan is one of the world's finest opera houses and boasts many famous names among its performers. A Salieri (Mozart's arch enemy) opera was the first to grace the stage back in 1778, but these days the annual La Scala season begins on 7th December, the day of Milan's Festival of Saint Ambrose (Festa di Sant'Ambrogio). You can often come across last minute tickets, but if not, take a trip to the interesting La Scala Museum, which documents the history of the opera house and contains artefacts belonging to past stars and composers.

  • Navigli canal district (1.55 km) - The Navigli district in Milan is a popular meeting spot for the Milanese. Arty shops, bars and restaurants line the two canals (navigli) that radiate from Piazzale 24 Maggio, the largest piazza in Milan. Here is a good place to experience the Milanese tradition of the aperitivo. With every drink bought during happy hour you can sample a variety of Italian specialities and there is usually enough food to ensure that you will not need to eat anything else that night!

  • Pinacoteca Ambrosiana (1.18 km) - The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, both a library and an art museum, was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo in the 17th century. The collection is made up of both Italian and Flemish artists, including the supposed first Italian still life by Caravaggio. Also displayed is a lock of Lucrezia Borgia's hair, declared by Byron to be the most beautiful he had ever seen.

  • Portinari Chapel (1.16 km) - The Portinari Chapel is the jewel in the crown of the Church of Sant'Eustorgio in the Ticinese district of Milan. Commissioned by Medici banker Pigello Portinari to house the remains of St Peter the Martyr, the beautiful chapel contains work by Michelozzo and Vincenzo Foppa. It is also worth having a look inside Sant'Eustorgio, where some of the bones of the Magi are kept.

  • Columns of San Lorenzo (1.27 km) - The modern day location of the Milanese Columns of San Lorenzo, (in front of the Church of San Lorenzo), is not actually where they were originally erected. The 2nd century AD Roman columns were recovered from their original site in the 4th century and relocated in Milan's popular Ticinese district. At night, the immediate vicinity of the Columns of San Lorenzo is brimming with young people, who congregate here before going on to one of the districts' numerous bars and restaurants.

  • Bagatti-Valsecchi Museum (1.72 km) - Milan's Bagatti Valsecchi Museum is the extremely well-preserved 19th century residence of the Bagatti Valsecchi family. Located just north of the city centre in the Milan fashion district, the private collection contains furniture and art works from both the 19th century and the Renaissance. Among the elaborately decorated rooms, the Bevilacqua and Fresco Rooms stand out for their intricately sculptured decor.

  • Poldi Pezzoli Museum (1.67 km) - The Poldi Pezzoli Museum is an eclectic mix of clocks, armour, jewellery and artwork ranging in date from the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance and 18th century Venetian art. The museum was the home of 19th century Milanese collector Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli and houses paintings by, amongst others, Bellini, Botticelli and Piero della Francesca. Also worthy of note are the very impressive marble staircase and fountain just inside the entrance.

  • Universita' Statale di Milano (0.81 km) - Milan's Universita' Statale (faculty of arts and law) is housed in the beautiful Renaissance Ca' Granda building. The various column-lined courtyards are favourite relaxation spots for students. Ca' Granda is also home to the Milano Statale Erasmus office for foreign exchange students.
