Local Attractions near Residenza Porta Guelfa

  • Perugia - San Egidio Airport (20.19 km) - (PEG) Airport of Perugia, Perugia.

  • Piazza IV Novembre (27 km) - The large Piazza IV Novembre is located right in the centre of the beautiful walled city of Perugia. The piazza is home to Perugia Cathedral, a building with a rather unusual façade that distinguishes it from any other Renaissance church in Italy. Also facing the piazza is the extraordinary architecture of the Palazzo dei Priori, which boasts some fine frescoes in the Sala dei Notai and the National Gallery of Umbria on the upper floor. Next to the Priori are the beautiful medieval Collegio della Mercanzia and Collegio di Cambio. Once the seats of the medieval merchant guild and money exchange, they are both elaborately decorated and well worth a look. Also worthy of note is Pisano’s intriguing Fontana Maggiore that sits in the middle of the piazza.

  • National Gallery of Umbria (26.95 km) - The large National Gallery of Umbria in Palazzo Priori houses a number of works of art by Perugia’s most famous son Pietro Vanucci, called Perugino. Among the many other paintings exhibited, mainly of a religious nature, are works by Raphael, Gozzoli, Piero della Francesca and Taddeo di Bartolo. There are also some excellent sculptures by Pisano and a section dedicated to 15th century Umbrian artists.

  • Perugia Archeological Museum (26.43 km) - Perugia Archeological Museum is housed in the beautiful cloisters of San Domenico church. Perugia was an important Etruscan town, a fact reflected by the wealth of Etruscan artefacts in the museum. The reconstruction of the Cai Catu Etruscan tomb, whose headstones demonstrate the passage from the Etruscan language to Latin, is particularly interesting. The museum also houses the Cippo Perugino, a stone with brightly coloured Etruscan inscriptions, and a variety of urns dating back to the 3rd century BC.

  • Basilica of Saint Francis (15.85 km) - The Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi is one of the most famous churches in Italy. Comprised of two churches the basilica is World Heritage-listed for its outstanding architectural and artistic value. The basilica was built on the spot where Saint Francis, Assisi’s most famous son, was born and his body is now housed in the crypt, making this an important pilgrimage site. The Lower Church is almost entirely covered in frescoes by Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti amongst others. However, the most spectacular frescoes are those in the Upper Church by Giotto detailing the life of the saint. Also worth a look are the medieval cloisters and the Treasury.

  • Basilica di Santa Chiara (15.18 km) - The Basilica of Santa Chiara is the burial place of Saint Clare, founder of the female wing of the Franciscan movement (Poor Clares). You can see her mummified body inside the church, making this an important pilgrimage site, and the basilica also houses a crucifix that was supposed to have spoken to Saint Francis.

  • Spoleto Roman Theatre (24.19 km) - Spoleto Roman Theatre has stood the test of being buried under medieval construction, yet still maintains its original shape. Performances are still held here during the Spoleto Festival (July); the orchestra still sit on the original Roman tiled floor and the audience have the chance to experience a taste of Roman cultural life by sitting on the original stone seating. Part of the theatre remains covered under the Church of Sant’Agata, which backs onto the stage and now houses the interesting Spoleto Archeological Museum.

  • Spoleto Cathedral (24.25 km) - Spoleto Cathedral is the most beautiful church in Umbria. The attractive façade, complete with rose windows and a golden mosaic, is set against the stunning backdrop of the Umbrian hills, but it is really the interior that houses the treasures. The astounding fresco cycle of the life of the Virgin decorating the apse was painted by Filippo Lippi, whose body is now housed in the Cathedral. Also worthy of note are the Erioli Chapels which house vivid frescoes by Giovanni da Spoleto and an intriguing Madonna and Child by Pinturicchio. The steps leading up to the Cathedral are the favoured spot for spectators attending the finale of the annual Spoleto Festival (July).

  • Pinacoteca, Spoleto (24.27 km) - Spoleto’s Pinacoteca (art gallery) is a fine collection of medieval and Renaissance art located in part of the Palazzo del Municipio. A guide shows you the paintings, mainly by Umbrian artists including the famous Perugino, that line the elegantly decorated rooms. However, given that the Pinacoteca also holds weddings, you will need to check if it is open. The entrance ticket also includes a visit to a 1st century AD Roman House located under the Palazzo del Municipio that still contains the original mosaic floors and remains of columns.

  • Rocca, Spoleto (24.44 km) - The Rocca Albornoziana in Spoleto is a beautiful medieval castle set just above the town. Originally built as a Papal fortress, the Rocca was later turned into a high-security prison which remained in use until the 1980s. During the guided tour of the castle you can still see where some of the cells used to be. The castle also houses the museum of the Duchy of Spoleto and has an open-air theatre with a capacity of 1200. From the Rocca there are excellent views of the Umbrian countryside surrounding Spoleto and the Ponte delle Torri, an impressive medieval bridge.
