Local Attractions near Guest House San Frediano

  • Pisa Cathedral (16.11 km) - Although often overlooked in favour of its Leaning Tower, Pisa Cathedral is worth a look in its own right. Standing majestically in the centre of the huge Campo de' Miracoli, the largest Romanesque church in Tuscany is an extremely impressive sight. The marble facade fits in perfectly with the Leaning Tower at one end and the Baptistery at the other. Notice the two-toned Baptistery roof: white on one side to blend in with the Cathedral, red on the other to match the roofs of Pisa. A walk on the ramparts around the Campo De' Miracoli is the best way to admire all three structures and the elegant Camposanto cemetery next to them.

  • Piazza dei Cavalieri (16.27 km) - Piazza dei Cavalieri is the most famous square in Pisa after the Campo de' Miracoli. The facade of the Palazzo dei Cavalieri is extremely impressive and if you have read Dante's Inferno or Shelley's Tower of Famine, you will recognise the tower of the Palazzo dell'Orologio as being the place where Ugolino della Gherardesca was starved to death with his sons. The area around the Piazza dei Cavalieri is also well-stocked for bars, cafes and restaurants.

  • Pisa Botanical Gardens (16.47 km) - Pisa Botanical Gardens are the second oldest in the world. Originally built to aid medical research, they still provide plants for medicinal and pharmacological uses, the Botanical Gardens also provide a beautifully peaceful haven from the hustle and bustle around the Leaning Tower and the Campo de' Miracoli

  • Torre Guelfa (17.13 km) - Although the Torre Guelfa is the lesser-known tower of Pisa, the view from it is definitely superior, if for no other reason than that you can clearly see the whole of the Campo de' Miracoli (where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is situated) against the beautiful backdrop of the Tuscan hills. It is also considerably cheaper and you avoid the long queues.

  • Teatro di Pisa (16.38 km) - The Teatro di Pisa is the premier cultural entertainment venue in the city. On the 2005 programme are Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Don Chisciotte and Roberto Vecchioni in concert.

  • Pisa football stadium (15.74 km) - Italian Serie A football team Pisa play at the Stadio Arena Garibaldi. Matches are played almost every other weekend during the football season and the 25,000 capacity means that tickets are usually fairly easy to come across (depending on the opponent).

  • Puccini's House (0.23 km) - Puccini's House in Lucca was the family home of one of Italy's finest composers. The house is now a museum relating to all things Puccini. The prime exhibit is the Steinway piano on which Puccini wrote his last opera Turandot.

  • Lucca Cathedral (0.5 km) - Lucca Cathedral is a beautiful monument in a beautiful city. The fascinating façade is remarkable for its many columns, all different. Inside there are works by Ghirlandaio and Tintoretto, but the prize exhibit is the Tomb of Ilaria del Carretto, considered Jacopo della Quercia's masterpiece.

  • Torre Guinigi (0.34 km) - Ever wanted to see an oak tree on top of a tower? Well, Lucca can satisfy that desire for you. The Torre Guinigi, part of the former residence of the important Guinigi family, is Lucca's most unusual sight due to the self-set oak trees that are flourishing on top of it. Climb the tower for fantastic views over the beautiful city of Lucca and the surrounding countryside.

  • Pisa's Bridge Fight (16.54 km) - Before the actual contest, two teams of competitors representing the districts of Pisa, parade through the town in traditional costumes. Crowds line the Arno from early in the day to watch the parade. The contest is like a tug-of-war, but instead of a rope, the teams have to push a wooden cart from one side of the bridge to the other. There are six contests involving different competitors from the Tramontana (Pisa's northern bank) and Mezzogiorno (southern bank). The team that wins at least four of them is declared the winner.
